Me: I was diagnosed in 2010 with breast cancer, had a double mastectomy, 8 rounds of chemo and 32 rounds of radiation treatments. I did my first Komen event 10 days after my last chemo treatment. In 2015 to celebrate my 5 years cancer free I decided to do my first Komen 3Day. What a trip, on my last day I started talking to a lovely lady before going into lunch and was invited to sit with them. Little did I know by lunch I was adopted into Team STEPS, and the lovely lady was Dr. Sherl Cowen. I thought that would be my last 3Day. 10 years later I am still involved with Team STEPS. My days of walking 60 miles is over, but I am still involved by being a training walk leader and crew member on the 3Day.
Cindy: I will never forget the day he called me from the E-Care center she was rushed to, getting tests and was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Little did I know I would only have 15 days with her; she never left the hospital. That sharp pain in her back was metastatic breast cancer that had spread to her spin. She was a rock; she supported me in 2010 when I was going through treatments. That was October of 2017 just days before the 3Day event and I had to go for Cindy. Cindy's story is that she held 2 jobs, busy taking care of the day-to-day stuff and not taking time for herself by getting her annual mammogram. Who do you know that is guilty of that? She told me in the hospital to never give up, to get the word out. To tell her story and get your annual mammogram. If not for yourself, at least for your family.
I am Jessie Miller, a 15-year cancer survivor, 8-time walker and 3-time crew member. I continue to do the 3Day because my sister told me too!
