Val Skinner Foundation Following the breast cancer diagnosis and then death of 28-year old friend and fellow professional golfer, Heather Farr, LPGA veteran and six-time tour winner Val Skinner made the decision to help young women and their families battle the disease.
Along with representatives from Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, which now houses the “LIFE Center”, she co-conceptualized “The Young Women’s Initiative,” a national campaign focused on a multifaceted approach to educate young women and their families, as well as healthcare providers, regarding breast cancer awareness, risks and early detection.
In 2000, that same year, Skinner created LIFE (LPGA Pros in the Fight to Eradicate Breast Cancer) to fund this initiative and hosted the first LIFE Event, a premier annual golf pro-am featuring the best women golfers in the world past and present - from the Ladies professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour. Over the years, Skinner’s LIFE Event and partners (www.valskinnerfoundation.org/foundationfriends) have raised a total of $8 million dollars with $3.5 million benefiting Susan G. Komen.
This year LIFE funds will help launch Komen’s Young Women Walking program. For more information about the Val Skinner Foundation and LIFE, visit www.valskinnerfoundation.org.
