1. Why are you changing the series schedule and leaving Atlanta?
We have heard from the 3-Day community a strong desire to update the series to bring new energy and attract new participants to this powerful and important program. We have heard you. That’s why we have tested a variety of strategies, such as debuting the 20-mile experience and piloting a hotel camp experience in Philadelphia. In that same spirit, this shift from Atlanta to Boston in 2019 was made in hopes of providing the opportunity to increase participation and create a new 3-Day experience.
We have also frequently heard a desire to return to previous 3-Day markets. To do so however, required a thoughtful examination of our existing markets. Based on an analysis of cost and participation, we made the difficult decision to exit Atlanta. This decision was not made lightly, as we know this bold and empowering event has touched the lives of thousands of Atlantans.
2. Why was Atlanta chosen as the city to leave in 2019?
As we explored the potential of adding a new market, we conducted an extensive analysis, which found that Atlanta has experienced higher declines in both participation and fundraising. Our responsibility is to grow the 3-Day program; to fund more research, more breakthroughs and help provide care to those who need it most. In order to thrive, the 3-Day needs to be refreshed and updated, and we need to bring renewed energy to the events and to event cities where research shows we can have the broadest impact.
3. Will you ever go back to Atlanta?
Just as we are announcing a return to Boston, it is possible that we will return one day to Atlanta. We continue to evaluate the entire series and will look for opportunities that will help us grow the 3-Day and allow us to return the greatest amount of dollars to the cause.
4. When and where will the New England 3-Day take place?
We’re excited to announce that in 2019, we are adding New England to the 3-Day Series, taking place in the Boston area on September 6-8, 2019.
5. Why was Boston chosen as the city to add a 3-Day in 2019?
As a former 3-Day city, we are familiar with Boston and there is a strong existing community there that supports the fight against breast cancer and endurance events. With the AVON 39 ending, there is strong potential to recruit walkers who are passionate about the cause, but new to Komen, who no longer have an endurance event like this in their area. We look forward to returning to Boston and welcoming that community back into the 3-Day family.
6. Does this mean Susan G. Komen is leaving Atlanta?
Absolutely not! Komen Greater Atlanta is a strong organization that provides critical breast health resources to women year-round and offers a variety of ways for supporters to join the fight. The Komen More Than Pink Walk Atlanta will continue as scheduled on May 4, 2019. We encourage you and everyone in your community to continue supporting Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta in ways that are meaningful for you. Visit them online at www.komenatlanta.org or call 404-814-0052 for more information.
7. How can I continue to support Susan G. Komen or participate in the 3-Day?
The Susan G. Komen 3-Day welcomes you to join us in any one of the seven markets in 2019, including: Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Michigan, Philadelphia, San Diego, Seattle and Twin Cities. We also encourage you to continue your support of Susan G. Komen by reaching out to Komen Atlanta and participating in events like the Atlanta More Than Pink Walk, held May 4, 2019.
8. Why are you eliminating the only 3-Day in the south?
Although we did consider returning to Tampa, after significant analysis and looking at a lot of variables such as potential participants, competing events and opportunities in each city, Boston had the most potential to attract the most participants. As a former 3-Day city, there is a strong existing community there that supports the fight against breast cancer and endurance events. With the AVON 39 ending, there is strong potential to recruit walkers who are passionate about the cause, but new to Komen, who no longer have an endurance event like this in their area.
9. Will you be providing any free travel offers to help Atlanta participants travel to another event, or help participants travel to Boston?
Walkers who raised at least $2,300 for the 2018 Atlanta 3-Day can earn a round trip plane ticket to travel to one 2019 3-Day event, if they live more than 200 miles from that event location, and raise $2,300 by six weeks prior to the 2019 event they are registered for. Crew members and 20-mile walkers who participated in the 2018 Atlanta 3-Day (or raised $2300) will also be eligible to earn a round trip plane ticket to one 2019 3-Day event if they live more than 200 miles from that event location, and raise $2,300 by six weeks prior to the 2019 event they are regsitered for.
A few important notes on the details of this offer:
10. Why not lower the fundraising minimum instead of leaving Atlanta, to encourage more people to register?
The Komen 3-Day is a unique fundraising event designed to generate critical funds to support our fight to save lives. As part of our market analysis of costs and fundraising trends, we determined that lowering the fundraising minimum was not a viable option as it would not increase the rate of return or increase revenue.
11. What if I registered for a 2019 event prior to receiving the free registration code and paid the $35 registration fee?
If you are an active 2018 Atlanta participant and you register prior to receiving the email for a free registration, we will refund the $35 to the credit card used at the time of registration upon request.
12. Is my free registration transferrable?
No, registrations are not transferrable. The free registration offer you have received is only valid for you and cannot be used by someone else.
13. I already registered. Instead of getting a refund, can that money be applied to my fundraising minimum?
If you would like, we can refund the $35 you paid to the credit card used to pay the transaction. Unfortunately, we cannot apply the $35 to your fundraising balance directly. If you want to make a personal donation to your fundraising account, you can do that once we have refunded your money.
