I walk in honor of my sister, myself and all those fighting.
I have breast cancer. Words I never thought I'd say and honestly a fear of mine as I reached the same age my sister was when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After my sister passed self checks became a consistent thing for me. I can't help but think my sister had a hand in helping me find this cancer as early as I did.
What was supposed to be a precautionary surgery to remove a small benign tumor took a turn when a second tumor was found during surgery. "The tumor I found during surgery came back positive for cancer." Words you never want to hear, especially after losing someone to cancer. February 25th, 2025 I was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma grade 1. Fortunately, this cancer is slow growing and was found extremely early. I had a bilateral mastectomy with DIEP reconstruction to prevent any chance of it coming back.
I've struggled with how my journey has looked. Not having to do chemo or radiation has made it feel like I got the easy way out but I still heard the words "you have cancer". My world shattered. My body has been changed by this. Thanks to my sister for really telling me about self checks and advocating for myself I was lucky to find it as early as I did. My journey has been different but still difficult and I'm a survivor.
