My first introduction to breast cancer was about 20 years ago when my grandmother was first diagnosed. It was a lot different then. She went through a mastectomy, chemo, etc. I went to visit her at home shortly after the procedure. All I wanted to do was give her a hug, but she was in so much pain. So I settled for a "way to go" light shoulder punch. Bad idea. I had no idea that would be even worse. At the time, I knew so little and we weren't supposed to talk about. Fast forward to today. My grandma had it twice and survived. My Aunt and my Mom also survived their battles with breast cancer. Now, we are more open about the disease. We are lucky to have survivors. Some people aren't. Some people still treat it as taboo. I walk, not only to raise money for a cure, but to start a conversation and raise awareness. Get the mammogram. Do the shower checks. Talk about it, so others can survive.
