The ring on my left ring finger is my Mother's wedding band. My Father gave it to my Mother on their Wedding Day over 60 years ago. The engraving inside the ring reads "RJL & DFL" followed by their wedding date. It is a simple but beautiful band with vertical lines running between the raised edges. During the course of their marriage, the vertical lines gradually wore away and are now barely visible. This ring represents a promise made between Mom and Dad that lasted almost 60 years.
When Mom passed away in 2012, my younger sister Kara chose the ring from among Mom's jewelry. Sadly, in late 2022, only 13 days apart, both Kara and Dad passed away. At Kara's memorial service, her husband Hiro gave Mom's ring to me, along with pieces of Kara's jewelry she wanted me to have. When Hiro passed away unexpectedly in 2023, I began wearing the ring every day. It is a way to connect me to Dad, Mom, Kara and Hiro, and to remind me of the promise I made to Mom to continue participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, and to continue raising funds and awareness to fight breast cancer and by extension, all cancers.
