Sisters
Me: I was diagnosed in 2010 with breast cancer, had a double mastectomy, 8 rounds of chemo and 32 rounds of radiation treatments and kicked cancer in the butt. I did my first Komen event 10 days after my last chemo treatment. With the support of my husband and coworkers they helped me get through the Race for The Cure 5k. In 2015 for my 5 years cancer free I decided to do my first Komen 3Day. What a trip, on my last day I started talking to a lovely lady into lunch and was invited to sit with them. Little did I know by lunch I was adopted into Team STEPs and the lovely lady was Dr. Sheryl Cowen. I thought that was my last 3Day. 10 years later I am still involved with Team STEPs. My days of walking 60 miles is over, but I am still involved by being a training walk leader and working crew on the 3Day.
Cindy: I will never forget the day she called me and was at an ECare center getting tests and was diagnosed with breast cancer. Little did I know I would only have 15 day with her, she never left the hospital. That sharp pain in her back was metastatic breast cancer that went to her spin. She was a rock, she supported me in 2010 when I was going through treatments. I was in shock, that was October 2017 just days before the 3Day. Cindy’s story is that she held 2 jobs and was too busy to take care of other stuff, the bills and everything else to get her own mammogram. Who do you know that is guilty of that? She told me in the hospital to never give up, to get the word out. Get your annual mammogram. If not for yourself, at least for your family.
I am Jessie Miller, a 16-year cancer survivor, 8 time walker, 4 time crew member. I continue to do the 3Day because my sister told me too!
