In 2003 I took my first step. In 22 years, my steps have taken me from the South in Atlanta to the North in Boston on the Atlantic Ocean. From the North to Denver (3 times) in the mountains to Seattle on the Pacific Ocean. From Seattle south to San Diego, from there to Phoenix and finally to Dallas Texas. Who would have thought that first step would have taken me to so many places. And along the way, I have met so many wonderful people. Heard so many heart-breaking stories as well as heart warming stories. But what I realized as I traveled around the U.S. is that no matter whether you are rich or poor—cancer doesn’t care, man or woman—cancer doesn’t care, old or young—cancer doesn’t care, any nationality—cancer doesn’t care, CANCER JUST DOESN’T CARE.
BUT what is most important is that YOU CARE. Every year as I write my letter, I wonder, “Have I asked you too many times to donate”. “Is this a bad year financially for everyone?” “Do people think too much money has been donated yet cancer is still here?” But no! Each year you continue to join me on this journey. I thank God for every one of you. I pray you and your family remain free from cancer’s grip, but I know that doesn’t happen. Cancer continues to take our mothers and dads, our sisters and brothers, our children, our friends. I could go on and on.
So, I ask you again to join me by donating, as I go back to Denver at the end of August. Thank you for being there not only for me, but all those battling cancer of any kind.
Lucy
