I began participating in the 3-Day in 2011 to support the courageous fight of a close family friend. Just weeks after the 2012 walk, she lost her battle, surrounded by her loved ones. That moment marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment for me. I knew my journey would not end until a cure was found. This year, I will participate in my 14th and 15th event, not only to honor her life but also to remember all the incredible people I have met along the way who have inspired and supported me.
Despite all the challenges she faced, she lived life to the fullest and refused to let cancer define her. Her infectious smile and radiant energy could light up any room. It’s hard to believe she’s been gone for over 12 years, yet the impact she had on my life remains as strong as ever. Some people are placed in your life to leave a lasting imprint, and she was one of those people for me.
Her unwavering spirit is what led me to advocate for cancer research. I believe that a cure for one form of cancer will lead to breakthroughs in treating, if not curing, many others. For this reason, I will continue to participate in the 3-Day and raise funds for research. To date, I have raised nearly $42,000. Although a cure has not yet been found, the advancements made in the 13 years I’ve participated are undeniable, and every dollar raised brings us closer to a solution.
If you’ve ever wondered how you can make a real difference in the life of a cancer patient and their family, I invite you to donate. Your contribution can fund crucial assistance programs, groundbreaking treatments, and essential research. The Komen Financial Assistance Program helps patients make decisions without the fear of having to choose between chemotherapy or paying rent. It also helps fund mammograms, which are vital in detecting cancer early - giving women diagnosed at stage 1 a 99% survival rate, compared to only 66% for those diagnosed at stage 3. Donations also support early-career scientists, ensuring that critical breast cancer research continues as experienced researchers retire. This organization is the driving force behind the development of every one of the 19 breast cancer drugs approved by the FDA in the last 12 years.
I am deeply grateful for your support. Every step we take brings us closer to a cure. Thank you for being a part of this fight with me.
Please note that in the time it took you to read this, three more people were diagnosed with breast cancer, and one more person has died. Together, we can bring an end to this. Together, we can make a difference.
