I’m sure I say this every year but I never imagined, when we did our 1st walk, that I’d still be a part of this event all these years later. I don’t know what it was that made me think that this was a 1-or-2-and-done kind of thing, but I have definitely found a passion in this fight over the years.
I couldn’t be more grateful to everyone who has supported me in the past and to anyone who can support me this year! The walking is important to create a presence and promote awareness. The fundraising is important so Susan G Komen can continue research that steps us closer to a cure.
I’ve learned so many things as I’ve watched loved ones fight and learned about other people’s stories. It’s not about “saving boobs,” it’s about not turning lives upside down. “Survivor,” I’ve learned, is not always a total win. Surviving is important and there are far more survivors than when Susan G Komen started its mission. That is amazing! Seeing so many physical limitations, constant fear of spreading cancer cells, and/or financial hardships makes you realize, however, that surviving can be a relative term. Too many people are missing their pre-cancer lives. I want to keep fighting until we don’t have survivors, because we have cured this disease! I also believe that, once we figure out one cancer, we’ll quickly figured out all the cancers!!!
This year, I will walk 60-miles in San Diego meeting new people, walking with my team, and thinking about my growing list of “whys.” My walk is Nov 14-16 and I have started to kick up the training!
I am also going to join the crew, biking through the route to support the walkers. As a walker, I have always loved the crew’s presence and last year it was so much fun to be a part of this side of the event. The crew thought they could bring me over to the crew side fully but I couldn’t give up walking…never…well, maybe when there is a cure! I’ll be keeping walkers safe Aug 1-3 in Denver.
I hope you can make a donation (big or small…they all matter!) to support my efforts and this fight. If you’d rather donate through my Pickleball Fundraiser in Denver this summer, I’m working on those details and will get them out soon!
Thank you for being a part of my team. I couldn’t do it without all of you!
