I am worried. As a 19 year survivor, I count on my yearly mammogram and my yearly breast ultrasound. These diagnostic tests are incredibly important to my continued health. And I am not the only one who could be affected by the proposed 26% cut to the department of health and human services.
These cuts could result in Congress defunding programs which assist individuals with low-incomes and no or inadequate insurance gain access to breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services that are free or low-cost.
Since its inception, these programs have diagnosed nearly 80,000 invasive breast cancers, over 25,000 premalignant breast lesions, more than 5,000 invasive cervical cancers, and over 248,000 premalignant cervical lesions.
Komen is the world's largest private funder of breast cancer research and education. It funds a wide range of research, including basic, clinical, and translational studies. Komen's work has contributed to a significant reduction in breast cancer mortality and the approval of multiple new breast cancer drugs.
60 miles is hard. Chemo was hard and the cancer phone call stunk. I will be walking my 18th and 19th events this year and, with your help, we will continue to change lives. Please donate today!
