I have lost track of how many 60 mile 3-Days I have completed -- there was Year 1 in Detroit, which is before Komen was on the scene, Year 2 in LA, Year 3 back in Detroit, and then, over a span of about 20 years, 3 in DC, 3 in Boston, 2 in Chicago, one in Phoenix, a few more in Detroit, and maybe I'm missing a place or two. I've walked with my daughter, my mother, friends, and alone (well, as "alone" as you can be with so many people on one sidewalk ...).
Until a few years ago, I always felt like I was walking for a good cause, but it was not personal. Then my mother, who had previously completed the 3-Day when she was 70, was diagnosed with (and recovered fully from) breast cancer, and more recently, I was diagnosed with (and am now in remission from) non-Hodgkins lymphoma. So this fight against cancer is personal now.
I know from experience that the 3-Day is hard, but it's not as hard as cancer. I will continue to walk as long as I am able, to end breast cancer forever.
