Please support me as I commit to an incredible challenge. The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. It will be hard, but it’s not as hard as breast cancer. It’s not as hard as chemo. It’s not as hard as getting bad news at your latest scan. It’s not as hard as saying goodbye. And that’s why I know I have to do this. That’s why I’m walking and why I’m raising money – to end breast cancer forever.
24 years ago my grandma Ele did this walk for her 80th birthday. She was the oldest woman doing the walk and she was incredible. At the time I didn't know what it meant. I just knew it was a lot. My grandmother was a giving, loving and spiritual woman who always did things for others. She saw a cause that needed attention and she gave it.
Fast forward now to my adult life. I am a friend, a mother, a daughter, a sister and I have seen too many women diagnosed with breast cancer. I am walking in their honor for the fights they have fought and are still fighting:
My cousin Laurie battled and beat breast cancer. She is celebrating her 10 year anniversary of being cancer FREE. You go girl! She is such an incredible woman who bleeds joy and happiness wherever she goes. And she goes a lot of places since she is a flight attendant. I can only imagine how fun her flights are!
Ele and Maggie's Kindergarten teacher, Monique Mistler, has fought breast cancer TWICE! She has become a dear friend of our family. She loves on our girls and her students. She's always commenting on how she will not let cancer take away her ability to do great things.
The vice principal at the kid's school, Chelsea Price, was diagnosed with breast cancer last school year. She endured a full year of chemo and came back to work when she could. We couldn't keep her away from the kids. At the start of this school year she is back and proud to be cancer FREE!
My brother-in-law Brian's mother Bobbie (aka Lollie.....aka the best human in the world) was diagnosed in 2020 with breast cancer and is still battling it daily. She is the most lovely woman. Her smile...the best. Her heart...the best. The love for her family...UNTOUCHABLE. Love you Lollie.
And last, but not least, my dear friend, Ashley Fisher. She was diagnosed last year and it currently cancer free, but going through chemo for preventative measures. Her positivity has radiated through her whole process through the good and the bad. She is my baseball mama. We think alike. We love hard on our boys. And I love her with all my heart.
Going through cancer is not something that is imaginable, but if I can do something as small as walking for a cure and change I will do what I can for the people I love. This is just a small list of women out of many. Support and prayer is the most powerful thing we can do as a community. Please help support me in my walk to find a cure for them all.
Thank you so much,
Erica
