August 26, 2011 will be a day that neither me nor my family will ever forget. At the age of 38, I was diagnosed with Stage IIb, Grade 3, Triple-Negative Invasive Ductal Carcinoma...and my reality to that point was changed forever.
After an urgent surgury, dose-dense Adriamycin (the infamous and aptly named “Red Devil”), Cytoxan and Taxol and 36 radiation treatments, I stumbled my way into remission and was declared cancer free on August 26th, 2016! However, the fight continues.
It was during one of those oh-so-humbling chemotherapy treatments that I first saw an advertisement for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day. As I sat in a Baylor infusion chair that cold, January day in 2012, I looked up and made a deal with the Powers-That-Be that if I got out of that mess alive, I would walk the 3-Day every year I was blessed with my life.
In November of 2012, I walked my first event...and haven't looked back! It has only been through the immeasurable generosity and support of my family, friends, co-workers and Survivor Sisters that I have been able to participate each year and once again, I must call on all of you to help me keep my promise! This year, I am again keeping it close to home (after walking New England in 2019 and San Diego in 2021 to celebrate my 10-year SURVIVAL!) and have registered for my home walk in Dallas - my 15th walk overall! You've helped me to walk a whopping 840 miles so far…help me to make it 900!!!
Thank you all for your continued support and I can't wait to report back on yet more incredible experiences with my 3-Day family specifically, my fabulous team - Pink Soles!
The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. It will be hard, but I assure you - it's not as hard as breast cancer. It's not as hard as chemo. It's not as hard as getting bad news at your latest scan. It's not as hard as saying goodbye. And that's why I know I have to do this. That's why I commit.
I walk for you. I walk for me. I walk for life.
Blessings,
Michelle
