This will be the 13th year I'm joining the 3-day family. In September of 2009, I had a routine mammogram on my birthday. That mammogram led to a biopsy and a diagnosis of early-stage breast cancer. Two months later, I had a lumpectomy, and a re-excision just after Christmas. After 7 weeks of radiation treatments. everything looked good and I still get checkups every year. 

My grandmother succumbed to breast cancer, my mother fought and survived breast cancer, and I've survived it. My sister was diagnosed just this year and is fighting. I walk - and crew - for my daughter, Kaitlyn. I walk in the hope that she will not have to face the disease her mom, her aunt, her grandmother, and her great-grandmother fought. I also walk for the many friends I now call family who I have met over the last thirteen years.  

I have another very personal reason to walk. My husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma - a blood cancer - two years ago and has been through chemotherapy, a failed stem cell transplant, and is now on a drug discovered through cancer research - and is in remission. He is doing well, but myeloma is one of those cancers that don't have a cure - just remission. We are hoping to keep him in remission for a long time.  

I walk for the many friends who have been diagnosed with any kind of cancer - for I truly believe that advances made in any type of cancer lead to advances in all. I walk for those we've lost - for in their memory lies the strength to keep going.  

Why do I walk and crew? I walk and crew for my daughter, my mother, my sister, and myself. I walk and crew for all those that have fought a brave battle but are no longer here. I walk and crew for those that have fought and are survivors. I walk and crew because I can - and because any advances made in treating one cancer helps all. I want to help beat this beast.
