Please support me as I commit to an incredible challenge. The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. It will be hard, but it's not as hard as breast cancer. It's not as hard as chemo. It's not as hard as getting bad news at your latest scan. And that's why I know I have to do this. My mom has been involved in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day since 2007. In 2019 I got the opportunity to be involved in the New England 3-Day because before the 2019 event, I was too young to participate. In 2019, I was so lucky to have had the opportunity to be a part of the Youth Core. I was able to raise over $1,500 to help find a cure for breast cancer. I hadn't had the chance yet to walk the 3-Day in New England due to the pandemic. Then in 2022 I walked those 60 miles over three days here in Boston for my mom and raised $2,998. Last year, I was asked to step in as a fourth Youth Core leader at the 2023 New England 3 Day! It was an incredible opportunity that I got to experience another way to take part in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day.
This year, 2024, I will be committing to walk again! Only this year, I will be walking 2 days rather than 3. To me, the amount of days I walk doesn't make a difference, as I am still walking to help those who lost their battle, fighting their battle and have overcome the battle of breast cancer. I am still committing to fundraise to help find a cure for breast cancer, even though I am only walking 2 days.
Now some may know that my mom is at a higher risk of breast cancer due to her family history and in the fall of 2017 she had a mammogram that showed an early sign of breast cancer. They were able to treat it before it developed. I had recently moved into college for my first semester, in the fall of 2021 and was in my neighborhood so I decided to stop by my home to say hi to my family who I hadn't seen since since I moved. My moms brought me into a room and sat me down. They told me one of them had breast cancer. I was heartbroken because I thought I would never hear those words. Two days later she was going to have a procedure done to get rid of the cancer. She texted me that morning telling me that they were playing "Dancing Queen" (Yes, from Mamma Mia), on the radio and she knew I was with her. My mom's procedure went as planned and was successful. She is now this upcoming September TWO years cancer free! Last year, my mom faced many obstacles but she did not let it stop her from returning to the Medical Team at the 2023 New England 3-Day or from helping me move into my internship last September, with the Disney College Program. She continues to persevere and inspire me everyday to fight.
Now along with only walking 2 days this 3-Day in August, I am happy to say that my boyfriend, Kyle, has committed to walk in the Susan G. Komen 2024 New England 3-Day as a 1-day walker! He has committed to walk for those he knows who had and survived breast cancer as well as in honor of my mom who is a survivor of breast cancer.
This is why I commit. This is why I am walking 2-Days. Why I'm raising money - to end breast cancer forever. For my mom who is MY Dancing Queen and everyone else who is going through this fight.
