My name is Colyn Ashley and I began participating in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day back in 2017 for my then girlfriend, now fiance Jennifer Slosarik and her mother Sharon. Growing up, I was lucky enough to never know anyone with Breast Cancer....and then I met Jen. This beautiful girl who I instantly fell for and was lucky enough to have her fall for me. When we first started dating, I never would have imagined that she would have led me here.
You see, Jen is more than just a beautiful 25-year-old girl, she is an amazing woman who grew up in the shadow of Breast Cancer. Her mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer when she was just four years old and is the fourth generation of women in her family to battle this disease. Jen herself, was diagnosed BRCA-1 positive at just 18 years old. That means she has over a 90% chance of developing breast cancer before she is 50 and will become high risk ten years before her mother's first diagnosis.... that means her risk to develop Breast Cancer spiked last august when she turned 24! Even though she lives each day knowing these horrible statistics, you would never know it by her amazing smile and the joy that she and her family have brought into my life and the lives of so many others.
I know that this young lady was brought into my life not just to make a difference in me, but so I can help make a difference in the world. As a nurse, I have always wanted to help people live long and healthy lives, but this battle is personal. In meeting her and her family, and sharing in her life, I have seen first-hand what it means to battle a disease with dignity and how much supporting a loved one can truly make a difference.
I ask you to join me as I take on the challenge to raise $2,300 and walk 60 miles this August, to help find a cure for breast cancer. I have heard what it means to watch someone you love battle this disease and I have learned that nobody should have to go through this regardless of their strength and support. I am excited that I will walk with these amazing people and be a part of creating a world without breast cancer.
Please support me as I commit to an incredible challenge. The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. It will be hard, but it’s not as hard as breast cancer. It’s not as hard as chemo. It’s not as hard as getting bad news at your latest scan. It’s not as hard as saying goodbye. And that’s why I know I have to do this. That’s why I committed. That’s why I’m walking and why I’m raising money – to end breast cancer forever.
