This year will mark my 15th year walking with the Susan G. Komen 3-Day and I will celebrate this achievement by having raised over $40,000 to find a cure for breast cancer. On day two of this year's walk my family will celebrate my wife's 57th birthday, and the following week we will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. You may ask what does that have to do with raising money for breast cancer? In a word...everything. You see, at age 34 my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, and at age 38 we found out that it had metastasized. We were also told at that time less then 1 in 3 women lived beyond 5 years, and in most probabilities she would never live to see her 43rd birthday. Our daughter was seven, and we had also learned that my wife was BRCA positive and in most probabilities our daughter would be as well. She had been the walker, I had been the walker stalker, but we both stepped away to fight this disease. For her 42nd birthday, I surprised her and walked in her honor! Three years later, after a long road of surgeries and treatment, remission was holding, she had beaten the odds and was that one in three women...and we have been walking together ever since. In 2016, it was confirmed that our than 18 year old daughter was indeed BRCA positive, confirming the worst. Despite this we walk on together...for better or for worse. My girls live from scan to scan, test to test, treatment to treatment but we move forward together. Our family has grown by one with our daughter's fiance joining us, step by step mile by mile, we hold on to each other and we hold on to hope. For better or worse, in good times in bad we have each other, but we need your help to continue this journey.
Please support me as I commit to an incredible challenge for my girls and for yours! The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. It will be hard, but it’s not as hard as breast cancer. It’s not as hard as chemo. It’s not as hard as getting bad news at your latest scan. It’s not as hard as saying goodbye. And that’s why I know I have to do this. That’s why I’m walking and why I’m raising money – to end breast cancer forever.
