Ever since I was little, I have watched the strong women in my family come together year after year to walk in The Susan G. Komen 3-Day, 60-mile walk. As kids, my cousins and I would make signs, shirts, and sit in our tiny chairs to cheer on our moms, aunts, and friends as they take on this challenge.
I never quite understood the magnitude of this challenge, but I always felt it to be meaningful because I knew we were there to support my Aunt Sandy and many other individuals just like her who were battling breast cancer. My Aunt Sandy will always be one of my favorite people in the world - the most fun and caring aunt who would do anything for her friends and family. No matter what, she could always put a smile on your face. As I watched her not only walk 60 miles, but navigate the challenges of her life every day, I learned from a young age what it truly meant to be strong, have a positive outlook on life, and to inspire others.
I was grateful to join the Pink Butterflies for my first 3 day walk in 2022 with my sister Alyssa, my Aunt Sheila, and my cousin Emma. It was indeed an incredible challenge, but we did not lose sight of our cause. This walk was especially meaningful as our Aunt Sandy was unable to join us, as she was fighting her fourth battle with breast cancer, this type being metastatic. However, we knew she was cheering us on from home as she sent us her famous inspiring quotes by text message throughout the weekend. That weekend was one I will never forget!
This year, our 3 day walk has unfortunately taken on a whole new meaning for the Pink Butterflies as we lost our dear Aunt Sandy in January of 2024 to this terrible disease. This loss leaves a void in our hearts and our family, but we will continue to carry on her spirit and memory in the best ways we know how. I will always love, inspire, fight, and believe like my aunt Sandy did. We will always walk for her!
Thank you for reading my story and for supporting me and my family!
