Since 2013 I have been walking and fundraising to support breast cancer research, awareness, finding a cure and supporting survivors and those currently going through treatment, while honoring those we have lost. This year I got to see first hand where all of those fundraising dollars have gone. I was diagnosed in May of 2023 and by August 1st I was cancer free. I did my regular mammogram, as I was practicing what I preached all these years, and that is when they found the tumor.
I opted to do a double mastectomy and reconstruction. The cancer was hormonal ductal, and it was 6 cm. Because they caught it so early, my lymph nodes were clear, and because I opted for the double mastectomy, I didn't need radiation or chemo. They found a-typical cells in the other breast as well, further validating that I made the right choice for me.
I have now seen the difference that all of that fundraising has made for this process. I am proud to have been a part of the community of people fundraising, walking and supporting but now I also have a new role, survivor.
Thank you for all of your support over all the years, it made an incredible difference in my life. While I am proud to be walking with this community of incredible people, and I am still walking for all the survivors and to honor all we have lost, I have added my name to that list so this year will be even more special.
