I've walked 20 3-Day events in 9 different cities and "helped" (not crewed officially) 2 other cities. I walked Tampa the last 5 years of that city's event, Atlanta in 2012, Cleveland in 2013, Philly and San Diego in 2017 and added Twin Cities in 2018. I volunteered in Chicago 2013 and rode around on bikes with my dad for the last DC event in 2013. All in all, I've raised over $47,000 and walked over 1,200 miles for our cause.
Backstory...I started in the 3-Day event as a supporter. In 2008 my friend lost her second bout with breast cancer. She (Kim) had a good group of friends that honored her that year by participating in the 2008 Tampa Bay 3-Day. I supported the team along with my 8-year-old son, Jarrett all weekend. I was inspired more than I could understand at the time. I met some great people, saw raw emotions I had never experienced before, and was in awe of the event and the community around it. I decided that weekend I didn't want to sit on the sidewalk and cheer, I wanted to be a part of the solution.
Over the years I've met some amazing people, some of which are no longer with us. That's the blessing and curse of this community. I've discovered strangers that have the will power of a thousand, the fight of an entire army, but ultimately are taken by this horrific disease. I'm a better person having known them but it's hard to lose them as well. For that reason, I must continue my promise to do what I can to contribute to a cure, more awareness and more resources for those who can't afford them. It's not all about a cure, though that is the end goal!
The most amazing thing that the 3-day has brought to me is my wife! Karla and I met in San Diego the night before Day 1, 2017. Over the next 3 days we had the equivalent of 20 dates and spent all of the following Monday walking (yes, walking, after 60 miles the previous 3 days) around San Diego. I proposed to her a month later and she moved to Raleigh with me 2 months after that. She's been the most amazing thing in my life and we're happier every day we're together. We now walk hand in hand and are even more dedicated to this cause, together. This year we celebrate 5 years and as usual for our anniversary, we walk 60-miles for our cause!
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to our cause on my behalf. A few dollars go a long way and we have a long way to go.
Thank you,
Dylan
