Once again, I have committed to the incredible challenge of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day. The 3-Day is a 20-, 40- or 60-mile walk over the course of three days. This year there are five 3-Day week-ends taking place in five different cities. I have committed to walking 60 miles in Denver, Dallas/Ft. Worth and San Diego; 180 miles over nine days. I participate in these walks to remind myself of my breast cancer journey that started with my diagnosis in Aug 2018, how much I went through during my cancer journey and to prove to myself that I am stronger than breast cancer. I also walk for those just diagnosed, those currently going through treatment and for those that can’t walk. The fundraising portion of the 3-Day most difficult part for me, because I hate to ask people for money. But, because of my battle of my battle with breast cancer and in memory of my mom and dad, who both died of breast cancer, I step outside of my comfort zone and fundraise for Susan G Komen. With the money raised by these walks SGK is able to raise breast cancer awareness, increase access to breast cancer education, provide financial support to patients and families dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis and fund numerous research studies and grants to find a cure for this terrible disease.
In order to participate in the 3 walks I have committed to for 2023 I am required to raise a minimum of $2300/walk, or a total of $6900 for the 3 walks. However, this year I feel called to increase my fundraising commitment; therefore, I am increasing my fundraising goal to $9000 or $3000/walk. I realize this is a lofty goal given the current economy and inflation rate. Still I believe that people want to help find a cure for breast cancer. Were you aware that breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women? That means mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, aunts, granddaughters, cousins, and friends are being taken away too soon because of this hideous disease. For this reason, I ask you to please donate what you can to this fundraiser, so that together we can find a cure for breast cancer. Donate so no woman (or man) has to hear those terrible words, “You have breast cancer”. Who knows, it could be your dollars that funds the research study that finds the cure. Also, any donation no matter how big or small makes a difference.
