Why on earth am I training, in the Texas heat, to walk 60 miles...again...this year? I do it because every single year 1 in 8 women and 1 in 833 men will get a breast cancer diagnosis. You see, I teach at a high school in Keller, and to put these numbers in perspective for my campus, that is 207 girls and 2 boys. These would be my fellow/favorite teachers I love to go through life with, and my students I'm pushing to finish assignments, to stay awake for the lesson, to get through family drama(s), and do anything/everything to get to that graduation moment and beyond. If the numbers, 1 in 8, stay the same, all the females on campus, including me, would be wiped out in 8 years. In the same time span, we would also lose 16 boys?
Knowing these statistics, knowing I became an educator to make lives better, I can not possibly do anything other than lay down my footsteps for this and the next generation.
