1 in 8.
The American Cancer Society estimates that about 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. That means most of us know someone who has or will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. The odds are we’ll know more than one.
When my wife Cara was diagnosed in 2020, it was probably the most frightening moment in my life. We felt so helpless and so ill-informed. One thing we did know: it was detected early thanks to routine and available mammograms.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure has worked tirelessly in the fight against breast cancer on so many fronts, such as funding research, raising awareness, and providing support and advocacy services. I’m certain that SGK’s efforts made Cara’s early detection and recovery possible.
We came to understand that Cara’s cancer wasn’t invasive (thankfully). And following surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy, Cara has been cancer-free.
But the battle isn’t over. So many others are not as fortunate. That’s why I’m walking the Susan G. Komen 3-Day. It’s a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. It’ll be hard, but it’s not as hard as breast cancer. It’s not as hard as chemo. It’s not as hard as getting bad news at your latest scan. It’s not as hard as saying goodbye. That’s why I commit. That’s why I’m raising money and awareness – to help with prevention, to help improve outcomes. To end breast cancer forever.
