When I registered for my first 3-Day, it wasn't because I had a family history. Nor was it because I knew someone with breast cancer. In fact, as I listened to that ad on the radio, it was the little voice in my head saying, "That's something you have to do," that made me sign up.
Fast forward 16 years (yep! 16!) and I wish that my connections were the same. The sad reality is they are not. And while my blood-family still remains mercifully untouched, I certainly cannot say the same thing about my chosen family. Some of my most dear friends have been touched now. And, of course, in my time working at Komen I have made connections with so many people with every stage of the disease.
The bitter reality is I now mourn too many people, including one incredibly dear friend, who have lost their lives to breast cancer.
So yeah. Walking 60 miles in 3 days is hard. But it’s definitely not as hard as saying goodbye. And that’s why I know I have to keep doing this. That’s why I’m walking and why I’m raising money – to end breast cancer forever.
