As some of you may know, my mom, Barbara Bryan, was diagnosed with breast cancer over the holidays last year. The one year milestone is coming up and it has been hard on my family. My experience with breast cancer has been similar to the Greek mythology story of Sisyphus. Sisyphus was a Greek ruler, every day Sisyphus rolled a boulder to the top of a mountain, just to see it fall back down to the bottom. Day by day Sisyphus continues to fail, but he is resilient . Some people view Sisyphus’ story as sad and hopeless, but this story conveys tenacity and endurance. Like the boulder Sisyphus pushes, breast cancer can feel like an overwhelming burden, but a constant reminder to never give up.
