It’s been a few years since my last event (2017). Life has been busy. Then add on the world shutting down for COVID.
As you know this is a cause near and dear to me. While I do not have breast cancer, I know too many men and women who have been impacted. My journey started at age 35 when I had my first breast cancer scare. What was supposed to be a routine “let’s get a baseline” mammogram, turned into a roller coaster of “what if?” After a bioposy of a mass in my right breast, it was determined not be cancer and just a fibroadenoma. This mass can only be found if you really dig in and try to find it. You can only see it in a mammogram, and sometimes in an ultrasound. Because of this 2cm mass, I spent 5 yrs of callbacks and fighting insurance to cover the mammograms and ultrasounds. Once I turned 40, it was all covered, no questions asked.
Because of this I’m consistently reminding everyone to get their annual mammograms, as well as to do monthly self-breast exams. Our breasts are in a constant state of flux due to having kids, gaining and losing weight and going through perimenopause and menopause. Our hormones are just all over the place depending on where we are in life and health.
Fast forward almost 20 yrs. After about 10 yrs of “normal” mammograms, I’m back on the callback schedule, due to finding 3 masses in my left breast which we are monitoring. I will be scheduling my next diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound in the next few weeks where I hope that the new masses have remained stable, and I am taken off the monitor list.
I'd like to think that I am older and wiser as I go into my 10th Susan G Komen 3 Day Event. I hope you will support me to reach my goal to do this walk.
