Support Me as I Walk for the Cure!
My name is Melissa Bianco and I am a woman who has a great family and friend network (both back home in Canada and here in the United States), a job that I love (I'm a game designer at Paragon Studios on the MMORPG "City of Heroes" aka "War Witch"), and I have recently dropped over fifty pounds.
A year ago, I could barely walk around the block yet on October 1 - 3, 2010 I'm going to be walking 60 miles (!!!) in 3 (yes, 3!!!) days for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™ in San Francisco.
So here's the deal: Cancer doesn't care who it affects and if 1 in 8 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, it could be any of our friends, families, or co-workers. That's a very scary thought because I definitely know more than eight women (across the U.S. and Canada)!
Illness doesn't just affect the patient, it affects everyone they know, love, and work with.
This is an important cause and the walk promises to be a demanding but worthwhile experience for me. So I am committed, but I need YOUR help.
In order to be eligible to walk on the 1st, I MUST raise $2,300. But I want to go beyond that. I want to raise as much as I possibly can. ("Go big or go home", I say!!!) Please support me as I take this amazing journey in the fight to end breast cancer! Net proceeds from the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™ are invested in breast cancer research and community programs.
Who I Am Walking For
- My grandmother, Elaine, who is a breast cancer survivor - My mother, Andrea - My mother-in-law, Merlynn - My aunts on my Dad's side (birth AND marriage!) - Aunt Nancy's mom, Ethel Johnson, who passed away in 1983 - My aunts-in-law, Ann and Bobbie - My sister, Angie - My sister-in-law, Janet - My step-daughter, Danielle - My nieces, Allie and Savannah - My female co-workers - My female friends - ME
But I'm also walking for:
- Your mother(s) - Your sister(s) - Your wife - Your daughter(s) - Your aunt(s) - Your cousin(s) - Your niece(s) - Your grandmother(s) - Your female co-workers - Your female friends - YOU

I was just on a fantastic hike this last weekend. Purisma Creek is amazing!!
Something about walking and training and having a great view sure does make a difference.
I'm so psyched for the next one!

This is awesome. When you send out the first round of emails, you get that "first wave" of people who jump on the bandwagon and donate and then things naturally peter off for a bit.
Well, one of the great things that happened is that I signed up for the MS Walk next month (in honour of my husband, Ron, who has MS) and my mother-in-law gave me a big fat donation! And then she donated here, too.
AND THEN she asked if she could pass on the email to some people. I'm like, "Absolutely!!!" so it just sort of kicked off a second wind of donations. So I am grateful to her (and all the new donations, of course) for that gift.
Thank you, everyone, that has supported me so far. I'm getting closer!

So this weekend, I wanted to track some miles, so I joined a hiking group and we did a 6-mile hike of Stevens Creek Park.
What a view!
The hills started early, but I was like this goat-girl just shuffling my way up to the top at a pretty decent pace. It rained and it was muddy in spots, but WOW what a great view and I actually had a lot of fun meeting new people and having someone else plan my route for me. My next hike is coming up and that will be an 8-mile hike. Should be fun!

After ONE day. Can you believe it?! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?! I'm stunned. And grateful. And surprised. And pleased.
You know what this means? This means I get to put that little pink sticker on the pink paper where the circle is! (Okay, seriously, if you know ANYTHING about me, you probably know that I like "visual progress indicators".)
IN OTHER NEWS...
I started my new strength training workout yesterday (may as well do both), and at the end of it I thought to myself, "That's it? Huh. Not much of a workout." Until I woke up this morning all achey in places I was not expecting to be achey! So I guess it's working.
I'm going to be looking for a Training Walk Group in the next week or so. I DO have a hiking group already, so this all works towards my training. I did a quick walk yesterday at lunch and did 2 miles in about 35 minutes.
Not bad. That's it for now!

If you know of someone who has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer, let me know their name. I am keeping a list and will be walking in their honour.

I attended the "Getting Started" meeting, paid my registration fee, and signed up for the walk. I am a crazy woman to be walking 60 miles in 3 days, but I don't care. I've lost all this weight, been working my buns off to get in shape, love hiking, and now I can do something GOOD with these strong legs. Perfect! The walk isn't until October, which gives me plenty of time to get used to the distance and look for donations. This is the part that I hate (asking people for money), but if I don't meet the mininum ($2,300), I don't get to walk! How's that for motivation?
I'm also quietly debating starting a team. I'm going to put the feelers out and see how many of my friends, family, and co-workers I can suck-- er, convince to join me!
