All righty. Here we go again. I didn't get to walk in 2015, and 2016 had to be deferred, but 2017 is my year. I will ROCK this walk. I will make it mine. I will walk for 3 days, cover 60 miles, to raise money for research, scientiic programs, and community-based health and education programs for people who have been tasked with the sucky job of battling breast cancer.
How you can rock? What I need from you?
Not a lot. Just what you can afford. And yes, I can be convinced to act like a trained monkey in order to garner a good donation. I've spent the day walking around SF in pink spandex. I've ridden a motorcycle through a crowded outlet mall wearing spandex and a cape. I've dyed my hair neon pink and donned pink cammo and crossed the country in it. I've gone purple and green (though not at the same time!) and shaved my head for cancer research.
I do things. For money. LEGAL things, people.
So...what do I need to do this time? 'Cause I'm open to humiliation, ya know.
2017 is going to be all about the walk. I spent 2015 getting my chit together, so that I would be able to nail the 2016 walk before the deferral had to happen. Lather, rinse, repeat: the Spouse Thingy and I are going to kick asterisk in training for this. I am training, and training hard. WE JOINED A NEW GYM, Y'ALL!!! There will be walking on treadmills and the indoor track. There will be hill training in San Francisco. Swimming for additional cardio work.
Not gonna lie...this won't be easy. I'm not getting any younger. I have chronic pain. I'm frickin' fat. But I'll do it anyway.
I'll do it because cancer is a bitch; it's taken friends and taken the loved ones of people I care about. I'll do it because I can't do much else; I'm not smart enough to be the brains behind a cure. I don't have the resources to pour into research. But I have 2 feet that work reasonably well most of the time, and it's such a bitch that I can't NOT do this.
Progress has been made--not too long ago the 5 year survival mark was something fewer than 80% saw. Now? 99% NINETY-NINE PERCENT. Let's do this, people. Let's see 100%, and see it while I'm mobile enough to party my asterisk off when it happens.
