The Breast Cancer 3-Day

Wild Women Walking...

Please support me as I take an amazing journey in the fight against breast cancer! The Breast Cancer 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. Net proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust, funding important breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment.

This is a personal journey

There are a number of reasons that are a little too personal to go into here but the two primary ones are 1) My Mom and Her Sister and 2) My desire/upbringing/ingrained need to give back to the community somehow.

My Mom is a Parkinson's patient and struggling everyday to maintain some kind of control in her life. Her sister is a Breast Cancer survivor who recently lost her husband to cancer. I've been wanting to do something to honor the both of them and the impact they have had on my life. Mom's sister and her husband were always a joy to be around. I miss him terribly and really wish I could have seen him more in the last years of his life.

Growing up, we were always taught to give back to the church and/or the community. My Dad did a lot of charity work with the Lion's Club and for the Church. These events were things that we kids were often "volunteered" for but we never really minded. As a family, despite our problems, we always worked well together when there was a physical task at hand. It was a sense of belonging and camaradarie between us that we enjoyed.

D Day is approaching!!
I am getting really excited about this. I have made my travel arrangments and I am taking the Acela Express train to DC. I think this is the most relaxing way to get there and back. No cramped airplane seat, no worrying about driving, a food car nearby and internet access. Definitely the way to go.
Can't wait for the actual walk and the chance to meet all whole family of new people! Thank you everyone for your support and your help through this... I could not have gotten here without you.
Onward!

Woohoo!!!
Once all the Bake Sale payments are in I will have made my goal!!!!!

YAY!!!!!!
Training is not doing quite as well due to being sick off and on the last couple of weeks, but I'm still moving a heck of a lot more than I was 6 months ago. Having something to train for has really helped keep the momentum up. Will have to keep at it through the winter to be ready for next year too! :-)

Not much left to go... WooHoo!
Despite being waylaid by illness the last few days, I was able to walk 3 miles at work today, so Yay!!!
I have at least one major training walk this weekend.

Major Breakthrough!!!
More than $1300 raised!
I have less than $1000 left to raise!!! This is great news...a month ago I was really worried that I wasn't going to make the $2300 minimum... but now I am certain that I can do it.
Only a month left to go before the walk. I am really really excited about this and really looking forward to it.

Another week... another few donations...
And I get closer and closer to my goal of $2300.
Walking this weekend kind of took a back seat to everything else going on, but my stamina has improved definitely.
The aim this week is to get one 10 mile walk in and one 5 mile walk in at least.
I'm also going to try doing some canning in the next few weeks in order to help finish out my fundraising.
Starting to work on travel plans now as well. I am beginning to get really excited.

Rain this weekend was not helpful...
I didn't get to do a really long training walk this weekend due to the wonderful amount of Rain that Tropical Storm Danny dumped on us.
I did do one circuit around Fresh Pond with the hubby on Sunday morning before it got too hot out, but the rest of the day on Sunday was very active and there was a lot of walking in Boston in the evening as well. Overall not really enough for a good weekend workout... but definitely not horrible.
Today I rested... as the Training Guide tells us to do on Mondays. Tomorrow I plan to hit the gym downstairs for a bit of crosstraining. Leg muscles have gotten really well defined, but I need to stop using exercise as an excuse to eat. :-)

Wow!
We did 8.3 miles in the heat on Saturday and I am not even feeling it that much today. This is great. It feels very good to be able to walk that kind of distance again and not end up sore from head to toe.
Fundraising is going much better and I got a real boost from a friend today that just left me speechless. I was so thrilled to see it.
Keep moving, onward and upward!

Yay!!!
Really glad to see the fundraising finally getting off the ground. This is giving me a lot more hope for reaching my goal.
I've been walking 3-4 times a week at work and doing at least one long walk on the weekend. I hope to push that to two long walks on the weekend starting next week.
I still have a long way to go, but this weekend I pick up sneakers for the actual event. I am looking forward to it.

Training is getting better... panicking over money
I did a good long training walk this weekend and I am feeling a lot better about my training.
However, I am beginning to panic a bit over the lack of fundraising. I have been posting and pinging people a lot about it, but so far, have not quite raised $300. That still leaves $2000.
I'm working on it.

So, time to pick things up...
And kick both training and fundraising into high gear. I am walking at work 3-4 times a week and walking at least once on the weekends, but really need to start doing more of the long training walks.
But whoa, that's a lot of money to raise too... My teammate, Laurie, made comment that the minimum amount is 92 people giving $25. Hopefully, we will be able to meet that.
This weekend we are planning a long walk around Fresh Pond... probably at least 3 laps. Hopefully it will cool down a bit between now and then.
