Please support me as I take an amazing journey in the fight against breast cancer! The Breast Cancer 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. Net proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust, funding important breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment.

Not everyone is as lucky as I am

Many of you know that this past winter I found a lump in my right breast and was diagnosed with fibrocystic disease. I'm pretty lucky, whereas many of the people who go through the same agonizing wait for results and doctors' appointments aren't graced with the same answer at the end. I felt like I needed to do something more with this cause because it was just luck of the draw that I didn't come up with a breast cancer diagnosis.

I can't quite bring myself to just move on when so many people deal with the quiet fear of waiting for the news and then resolve and strength that comes with beating cancer. My own grandmother is a breast cancer survivor, so I have seen the other way it can go. In fact, I am walking in her honor.

I ask each and every one of you to think about the little things we waste money on every day - a Starbucks coffee costs more than $4, and I know I don't think twice about handing over that money. And yet, when it comes to fundraising, people tend to disregard the help they can give with small amounts!

I want to assure you that every little bit helps, even if you're just giving up today's cup of coffee. Know that it is all going to a great organization for a great cause. Maybe we can see the end of this disease in our lifetime!

In the BIG WEEKEND!!
I have walked so much that I have lost track of my milage (and lost my planner, so...there went that plan)! This weekend is the biggest walking challenge besides the event itself: 18 miles on Saturday and 15 on Sunday. I've been on the sick side this week, and pushed through the 18 even though I could have fallen over by the end and have blisters that are making my feet scream. Can't wait to be able to put that silly sticker on my card...it's the only thing that got me through today! :-)

Approaching 200 miles!
Funny how it seemed to take so long to get to 100, and 200 is so close! My short walks have been replaced by what used to be long walks, and my long walks are pretty much hikes. What's nice is that the training schedule is good for working people...short(er) walks during the week, then Saturday and Sunday have back-to-back longer walks. So this weekend I'll be doing 12 miles Sat. and 5 miles Sun. after walking 5 and 6 two days this week. As I walk, I think about how it's not any more difficult to walk 12 miles as it was to walk 5 in the beginning, so 20 miles doesn't look quite as intimidating as it did a few weeks ago. I'm still getting used to the 20 miles 3 days in a row thing, but it's coming!!! I appreciate donations in any amount, and you can donate more than once (I have!!) so thanks to all who've helped me and the Susan G. Komen Foundation out!!!

Hit 100 miles, and still going!
It's been awhile since I've posted, but travelling, family, and training have kept my summer pretty full! While I was out of town (and still trying to keep my training up), I hit my 100 miles, total, for the 8 weeks I've been training!!! *Hillary does a little dance* And today was the longest I've walked all together with an 8-miler that I took through downtown Dunedin and down Alt 19 and along Edgewater Park. It was hot and sweaty, but I met another walker out on the street and we chatted for a few minutes.
He is a gentleman in maybe his early 60's who is preparing for his 5th year walking! His buddy has a bum knee and will be crewing this year, so I will see if I can hook up with him training a few more times and catch him at the event. It was just kind of cool because he saw me grabbing a drink at The Boxcar and asked if I was doing the 3-Day. I asked how he knew, and he said that it was 12:30pm and I was sweaty and still going. He showed me his team t-shirt, which The Boxcar has agreed to sell to help him fund-raise. Just a nice guy, with the cutest little dustmop of a dog with an underbite.
More later!

Treadmill Walking
Because of thunderstorms in the area yesterday, I decided to jump on the treadmill at the YMCA and push it a bit harder than I might on the road. I tried to maintain that 4 mph speed, and realized that I'm not walking on the road quite as fast as I think I am. Darn it. But yesterday, I still got up to 4.5 mph for 1/2 mile out of the 3 miles I went for. Not bad, although my ankles are making it known today that they aren't happy with me. Took it easy today to make up for it, and will jump back on the road tomorrow, weather permitting.

New socks?
I took a chance and bought the thin-cushioned Thorlo walking socks for short walks, and the distance-walking socks for, well...you;re not stupid :-) I need to use the thick ones when I fit new sneakers, but I wanted to see if there was a difference.
Man! My feet were a bit warm (hard to escape in Florida during the summer), but even sweaty and wet from tramping through wet grass this morning I really was more comfortable! Yay CoolMax!
I'll be sticking with my little thin bamboo socks for now, as I'm only doing 3-5 miles (plus, HOT), but more than that will be Thorlo world!

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!
I went to the park after work today to do a fast 3 miles in the shade. I always wonder if I'm doing enough, so then I think I overdo. Then I think I'm thinking too much :-) But since I'm training sans iPod, I really haven't anything else to do.
I can't wait until my ankles and fronts of my calves strengthen a bit. During the faster, harder walks, I can feel the muscles yelling at me.
Today I saw a gopher tortoise munching on some grass, a turkey taking a dirt bath, and a ring-neck snake. Not to mention 3(!) armadillos. Good day!!!

First Week Out
Last week (27 April - 3 May) was my first week out on the pavement specifically for the 3-Day, and I ended up doing a grand total of 18 miles! Since I was done with all of my grad classes, I had a ton of free time that I couldn't find any other way to fill :-)
I will be bringing it down though as I don't think my knees are quite up to that much mileage right off the bat...need to do some working up :-)
So I am doing lots down at Lettuce Lake Park on Fletcher, and if anyone would like to join me, just shoot me an email!
