As many of you know, on May 6, 2008 I lost my best friend, Kimberly Teems Marques to breast cancer at the young age of 42. She struggled with this disease for years. She was first diagnosed at 34. She went through treatment and came out even stronger than before. In 2002, Kim and I participated in the Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk from Boca Raton to Miami. Between us we raised over $7,000.00 and walked 120 miles. Our group raised over half a million dollars. Kim got me through those LONG days by encouraging me and laughing at me the whole way. I could never have done it without her. Then, about 2 1/2 years ago the cancer came back. She fought as hard and as long as she could but finally she could no longer fight it. Kim was an amazing mother, daughter, friend and sister. She will NEVER be forgotten. I walked for her in 2008 and will be doing it again this year.
Basically, there is a group of people that walk 20 miles per day for 3 days. We sleep in tents and shower in semi trucks. (…and amazingly it’s the BEST shower you ever had after 20 miles of walking!) We have amazing crews that are at pit stops to refill our water/Gatorade, give us snacks, and encourage us along the way.
Before Kim passed away, I told her I was going to walk again for her, and I was going to try to take her daughter, my goddaughter, with me. She said she would be at the finish with bells on, and I believe she was and will be again. In order to walk, each participant MUST raise a minimum of $2,300.00. I am asking for donations for an extremely important cause. I’m sure breast cancer (or any other kind of cancer) has touched almost all of our lives in one way or another. A friend, a sister, a mother, an aunt, a daughter… Please help me on this awesome journey. It would mean the world to me and all the other Kim’s out there. If she wanted to leave anything behind in her memory, it was help for people that had to go through what she did. This is my way of helping.
