In November, I will walk in my 3rd - 3 Day 60 Mile Walk for Breast Cancer. It was a meaningful journey in 2006 when I walked for myself, and then again in 2008 when I walked for my friends, and I know it will be again in 2022 when I walk to honor the memory of my dear friend Caren Franzini and celebrate the friends and family members who are survivors.
Sometimes it is hard to believe that 23 years ago I was having surgeries, going for chemo treatments and then radiation. And sometimes it feels like it was yesterday. For those of you who knew me then, it was no surprise that I had chemo on Thursdays, rested through the weekend and was back at work on Monday. I was determined that this disease was not going to get the better of me. I had a mind, body, spirit philosophy. For my mind, I kept on working, for my body I worked with a trainer and walked and for my spirit it was coincident that I was studying with my Rabbi for my bat mitzvah in December, 1999. I thought I had all the bases covered. The cancer was removed from my body, the treatment was prophylactic. Almost 5 years to the day, one month after I finished taking my last pill, it was back. Another round of surgeries and more medication and now I am 17 years cancer free.
I walk so you don’t have to. Come join me on this journey as I honor my friends and family, those we have lost and celebrate those who have survived.
With love & gratitude,
Beth
