I walk for my mom Imelda, 17-year breast cancer survivor
My mom, Imelda, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. Her recovery journey has let her inner strength shine through. She invited me to walk with her in 2011 at the Komen Dallas Race for the Cure, and since then I have had the honor of leading our corporate team with a group of amazing team captains, and raise funds and awareness.
My sisters and I remind each other to get a mammogram every year, and celebrate when we get the results! It is now an annual tradition for my mom and our whole family to walk at a Komen event. Undeniably, my favorite thing about these events is seeing the hope fill up my mom's spirit when she sees Survivors who have beaten breast cancer for decades.
This year, I wanted to make a bigger impact in the journey to end breast cancer. For years, I have admired the folks who make the commitment to walk 60 miles over 3 days, but never thought it would be something that I would have the courage to do. After warming up to the idea, I signed up for my very first Komen 3-Day in New England and I am now all in!
Nothing about this is easy - going out of my comfort zone to raise funds, committing the time and energy to a training program, experiencing a temporary setback when I had to pause my training to recover from an ankle injury… But the upsides greatly outweigh the challenges, as I continue to meet some pretty cool people, share my story with others, and be inspired by the stories that I hear from people whose lives have been touched by breast cancer.
Thank you to my amazing supporters for your monetary donations, as well as your words of encouragement (they matter too!) - I have surpassed my minimum fundraising goal of $2,300, but I don't want to stop there... because every dollar I help raise supports life-saving breast cancer research, and that is PRICELESS!
Please support me as I commit to an incredible challenge. The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. It will be hard, but it’s not as hard as breast cancer. It’s not as hard as chemo. It’s not as hard as getting bad news at your latest scan. It’s not as hard as saying goodbye. And that’s why I know I have to do this. That’s why I commit. That’s why I’m walking and why I’m raising money – to end breast cancer forever.
