Dear my amazing friends and family,
Last year I had genetic testing to help me understand my risk of developing cancer. I was tested for inherited changes (or mutations) in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Mutations in these genes cause most cases of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. My test identified a mutation that runs in my family (relatives related by blood).
This test result means that I have Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer syndrome. This syndrome significantly increases my risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Fortunately, there are medical options to reduce my risks, which is why knowing about this mutation will be very helpful.
Once you receive results as these you can choose to be proactive and do preventative surgeries to cut down your risks or you can choose to monitor through yearly diagnostic testing. I chose to be proactive and can now call myself a 'Previvor'. I have not completed my surgeries but I am getting there.
Now that I have gotten that off my chest! Back to the task at hand. I am here once again asking for your support as I work on my fundraising for my 10th 3 Day walk! As you can see from my experience Breast cancer can effect everyone- even those who continue to fight for the cause to end this disease.
Please support me or anyone fighting for the cause with a small donation. And please find out if you may be at risk for a genetic mutation in your family and get tested!
Love you all,
Please support me as I commit to an incredible challenge. The Susan G. Komen 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. It will be hard, but it’s not as hard as breast cancer. It’s not as hard as chemo. It’s not as hard as getting bad news at your latest scan. It’s not as hard as saying goodbye. And that’s why I know I have to do this. That’s why I commit. That’s why I’m walking and why I’m raising money – to end breast cancer forever.
