Please consider supporting me as I take on an incredible challenge to make an impact in the fight to end breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen® 3-Day event is a 60-mile walk with a bold goal: to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026. We keep walking, and we keep raising money until breast cancer is done. Over the past 16 years and 150 events, the organization has raised more than $800 million- which Susan G. Komen has used to save lives and make huge strides in breast cancer research. That’s why I’m walking and raising money- to make that goal a reality.
In 2016, I participated in the 3-Day to make some changes in my life with my health and to help raise funds to end breast cancer forever. It was an incredibly inspiring experience that forever changed me. This year, walking takes on a whole new meaning. At the time I was walking for the women in my family who have been diagnosed and have been lucky survivors. My Aunt Cinda had a recent relapse with breast cancer and my late grandmother Jane had breast cancer as well. I was also walking for the men in my family, my great grandfather Marsh had breast cancer at a time when very little research as done in males. As a teacher, I’ve been touched by many who have been affected by breast cancer and other types of cancers. I walked for them, too.
I was also walking for a dear friend, Nikki, who at the time was going through treatment. She was a 38-year-old mother of three. Proudly, we wore tattoos that said, “Survive and Thrive, Nikki,” during the walk. She overcame, was in remission, and took the necessary steps to stay with her family. It was devastating to hear her cancer came back and within a year she tragically lost her battle. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about how to stop this disease from taking such special people. This hits me deeper now. A silver lining to this story is that through our grief, our families have blended and we are trying to live each moment while remembering Nikki. Not only am I walking because I never want my daughter to have to face this disease. But, I am also walking because I never want Nikki’s children to have to face this disease, either.
And so I’ll be lacing up my shoes, going on training walks, and most importantly, asking for money! It’s your donations that will help fund the research and the treatment that will make a difference. I’m not used to asking for money, but I know this is not for me. This is for Aunt Cinda, Grandma Jane, Great Grandpa Marsh, Nikki, and for the future of my daughter, Nikki’s children, and all of the women and men in your life, as well. The 3-Day is not until November, but my goal is to raise $2,300 before then, so I’m getting started now. You can help! Click the DONATE button above!
Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance for your generosity!
