Because 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed this year. Because nearly 2000 men and 40,000 women will lose the battle. Because my friend Linda is fighting off this cancer (which also killed her baby sister) for the third time. Lace up, fundraise, walk, repeat. Because in my lifetime we have to find a cure.
Ribbon patterns have been purchased, I am already thinking about my tent decorations, we're coaching each other and coaxing antics across the airwaves, I'm armed with my camp mail stationery (come on, what did you expect?) and I am spreading hope - humanity - support - and warrior mentality.
It's January 17 when I type this, and my list of honored breast cancer friends and family has grown by two:
I celebrate and support Liz, Mary Pat, Linda, Sunni, Jeanne, Ellen, Eliza, Anne, Yvonne, Courtney PinkWings, Gina M - Girls Love Mail, Lesley, Barbara B, Sally D, Amy, Jessica and Julie - Safari pals, Denise - who painted, Amy H, Loren, Tina, Toni, Jean, Anne, Monica, Joanne, Betsy W, Melissa, Jeanne Armour, Janet O'Connor, Rochelle R, Amy's sister, RibbonGeek Gale, Sharon Mulholland, Tina Weinstock, Carla Boden, Harriet Zocks, and Kim's sister. Survivors thrivors all of them!
I walk in memory of Walking in Sunshine teammate Fay Miller Luft (RIP April 27, 2017), Brandy Keller, age 39, RIP January 2018, Sarah's mum, Carol, Jean, Stevie's mom Antoinette, Thryza, Linda's baby sister Deena, Anne's mom-in-law Sylvie, NY 3-day teammate Jodie Kaplan, Margie's grandma, Jack's grandma Angelina D'Amico, Mindy Lieberman, and Whitney.
I've been challenged to [Walk] the Year, that is, achieve 2018 miles in 2018. Oh please are you kidding me? That is barely a walk in the park when it comes down to several hundred training miles and TWO Komen 3-days. The journey started years ago for me...in 2018, it takes me to Seattle for the first time.
I hope you will support my journey to kick breast cancer to the curb. Proud to write I remain a member of Komen's Commitment Club for "our" fundraising efforts - over $130K in my walking career.
Thank you! Sandy, Walker #1181882
