2018 will mark my 21st year of walking to fight against breast cancer and I thank you for joining in the battle.
By the end of 2017, I walked 29 events. That means 1740 miles (ignoring training miles) and over $90,000 raised for the cure with your help. In 2018 , I have signed up to walk again..... Seattle in Sept (see http://www.the3day.org/goto/PeggyPaulSeattle2018) and San Diego in November.... Why? Because our work is not yet done, so I walk some more.
This year, my sister-in-law, Patty got a new diagnosis. She did battle with this nasty disease and is doing well in her recovery….largely because of early detection and the advances that are made possible by the fundraising and awareness that these events produce. So I will walk Philadelphia, which is the closest event to Patty and my East coast family, in honor of the courage and strength that she brought to this fight.
I am quite blessed to have the physical ability to walk these walks. Quite honestly, I would do it again and again if I could take chemo or radiation away from one person by doing that...the list of women who I am walking for grows every year.....and so I walk! Because the survival rate is high for these women because of early detection and the many advances over the 19 years that we have been walking.
Each 3-Day event involves covering 60 miles on foot over 3 days with thousands of women and men who are committed to creating a world without breast cancer. During each of the walks, I am energized by the world of kindness that prevails and by the real heroes I get to walk and camp with every day. So, as long as I am able, I will be walking to state quite firmly that breast cancer CANNOT and WILL NOT win this battle! In doing so, I honor the courage of all those battling the disease; I celebrate the shortened lives of those who have lost the battle to breast cancer; And I share the hope that we can reduce and eventually eliminate the number of women who have to fight the battle. I invite you to join me in a bold statement against this disease. You can do in many ways, including:
* Reminding all of the women who are important to you about the vital importance of early detection. It is the only current hope.
* Keeping the walkers, the survivors and the victims in your prayers and/or positive thoughts.
* Joining me/us on one of the walks. The Wild Women Walking for a Cure team is an amazing group of women and men, girls and boys who are a delight to train and walk with. We welcome newbies and returnees every year.
* Making a contribution to the cause. Proceeds will be going to breast cancer research, treatment and awareness programs through Susan G. Komen for the Cure, one of the world's leading cancer organizations.
I need to raise at least $4600 so any and all contributions help. You can make a donation online using the "Donate Now" button at the top of the page ... or if you would prefer to write a check, just send me a donation (checks made payable to "Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure") and I will take it from there. Thanks so much for joining me in this important fight! Every mile and every dollar makes a difference!
