In 2009 two of my friends were diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I had an "A-Ha" moment. I needed to do something. I literally got into my car and heard a radio commercial for the 3 Day. It had to have been a sign, I thought to myself... I'm totally doing it! Here I am, 12 events later.
I have been a part of the SGK 3 Day since 2010. I have completed 7 events as a walker, 4 as a Crew member and 1 as a Volunteer & 'Stalker.' Thanks to the generous support of family, friends and anonymous donors I have raised over $25,000 and logged hundreds of miles.
The 3 Day is hard to describe unless you've been there. The 3 Day is a community, it's family, it's love and it's hope. I would have never thought that I would be blessed with amazing friendships. As you can imagine, being involved with such an event has brought heartache. Something so beautiful can at times be so ugly. Recently my friend Sharon spoke at Opening/Closing Ceremonies. She reminded us that she lives Stage 4 Metastatic BC and has been thriving for 13 years! She was told she wouldn't live to see her 43rd birthday. Guess who defied the odds and just celebrated her 50th birthday? Sharon is alive because of Komen. Breast cancer has impacted 4 generations in her family. That means that 18 women in ONE FAMILY were diagnosed with this disease. 12 lives were lost IN ONE FAMILY. Can it get any worse? Yes, it can, her 19 year old daughter, Jenny is BRCA positive. After letting this soak in I decided to dust off my cancer kicking boots and get back to work. My break is over. In September of 2018 I am going to join Sharon, John & Jenny and walk in the Philly SGK 3 Day with Friends With Heart.
In 2016, Komen announced a Bold Goal—to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026. That’s why I’m walking, and raising money—to make that goal a reality. Please support me as I take on an incredible challenge to make an impact in the fight to end breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen 3-Day® isn’t just a 60-mile walk over the course of three days—it’s a journey to the end of breast cancer.
