Every year I come to this page and I say to myself thank you. Thank you for the support that I have received over the years. Thank you to my doners who continue to give so generously as we continue to work towards a cure. Thank you to the Susan G. Komen 3Day, who is currently one of the only organizations working with Stage 4 breast cancer research to cure people like myself who wake up every morning and thank God that remission is holding as currently there is no cure at Stage 4. Thank you to the doctors and researchers that have developed new treatments and new ways to help identify this terrible disease such as the BRCA gene which my daughter was diagnosed with last year.
But why am I thankful for that, what does that mean? It means that without your continued support for a cure there is a nearly 90% chance that she too will have breast cancer before she reaches her 40th birthday. It means she would become the 5th generation of women in our family to have been attacked by this disease. It means that she has some difficult and aggressive choices to make in planning her life even before her 21st birthday. But, it also means that she is empowered with information and treatment options that we have never had before. It means that thaks to organizations like the 3Day and people like you, she has choices that 4 generations of women did not have and a chance to take control of a disease before it takes hold of her.
My family and I will continue to walk in the 3Day because this is a fight which we do not have the luxury of walking away from. This is a fight that we battle daily with medications and scans, with laughter and tears, with pain and joy but most importantly with the love and support of amazing family and friends. I am writing this because of you. I am here because of you. All of you who have stood by us through the laughter and the tears and provided the continued financial support to this walk every year as we battle not just the cancer cells in my body or the genetic mutation in my daughter, but fight for the 1 in 8 women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
So once again I humbly ask you to please support me as I take on an incredible challenge to make an impact in the fight to end breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen 3-Day® isn’t just a 60-mile walk over the course of three days—it’s a journey to the end of breast cancer. In 2016, Komen announced a Bold Goal—to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026. That’s why I’m walking, and raising money—to make that goal a reality. Remember, everyone deserves a lifetime and I am living proof that your donations matter. That you matter and are an integral part of helping make the dream of a world without breast cancer, a world with more survivors a reality!
