Please support me as I take an amazing journey in the fight to end breast cancer! The Susan G. Komen 3-Day® is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. Net proceeds help support research, scientific programs and community-based breast health and education programs for women and men facing breast cancer.
I participate in the 3-Day for a few reasons. The first is that my great aunt recently passed away from breast cancer after battling it on and off since 1991. I found out that my aunt had breast cancer again, after 15 years in remission, about 2 months before the 2012 Dallas/Fort Worth 3-Day. She had such a great attitude even as she kept getting worse and worse. She passed away about a month before the 2015 3-Day, and made that walk even more important. She will always be one of my inspirations.
The second reason I participate in the 3-Day is because of a lady named Kim Heard, who I am named after. She was my mom's best friend and a breast cancer victim. I never really got to know Kim but it is not hard to see that she shouldn't have left us so soon from such an awful disease. She was diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer in her 30's and was taken at the age of 39, a wife and mother to 3 amazing children. She lived to see her nephew and me come into the world, even though she was in the hospital when we were born. When I see how much my mom and her family miss her, I cannot help but feel the need to help take down this horrible illness.
The third reason I walk is for my 2nd and 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Shawn Franke. She has made a huge impact on my life and I still keep in contact with her, almost 10 years later. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016 and after a hard battle, she beat it. I would write her letters every week that she would read during her chemo treatments. I never want to have to write one of those letters again.
I also participate in the 3-Day for anyone who has breast cancer, has had breast cancer, or could get breast cancer, along with their families.
Every year as I talk to walkers, I learn so many new stories and hear of so many amazing people. I don't want anyone to have to go through what cancer victims have to go through. I believe that if the cure for breast cancer is found, it won't be long before all cancers are cured.
I was on the Youth Corp 3 years in a row, and my first walk was the 2015 Dallas/Fort Worth 3-Day. Since I started walking, I have been to Dallas/Fort Worth, Michigan, and San Diego. Over the past 8 events, I have raised over $25,000 and I hope to pass the $30,000 mark this year between my 2 walks.
The past few years, I have been asking football stars and coaches to donate signed footballs to raise money and have managed to get a pretty good start. For more info on that or links to bid on a football or other item go to http://footballsforthefuture.weebly.com
My mother will be walking her 10th walk this year, and I will be walking my 6th walk, my 9th event, in both Dallas/Fort Worth and San Diego. Please find a way to donate, either your time or money, to this great cause.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Kim Curtis
