Hello, my name is Pattie Pennington. I am taking a bold step and participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk for my second time. The walk is November 2-4, 2018. I am a breast cancer survivor and this event is very dear to my heart. If it wasn’t for a yearly mammogram, I might not be here today to tell my story. I am now 6 years and 4 months cancer free and it is such a wonderful feeling. Sure, I lost my hair but I never lost my spirit to fight this nasty disease. My family, friends and community shared so much support to me. I’ll never forget the day I got the call telling me that I had breast cancer. I was devastated and thought my world had ended. The day after my lumpectomy surgery I attended my first Susan G. Komen event in Denton, Texas. The support that I received while there was overwhelming. I quickly learned that I was not alone in this fight. This is why I am working so hard to accomplish my goal of raising $2500.00 and to help bring awareness to early detection. All funds that I raise will stay in the North Texas area to help low income and uninsured men/women get mammograms or assist in treatments if breast cancer is detected.
Early detection can be a powerful aide in the fight against breast cancer. The 5 year relative survival rate when caught early before it spreads beyond the breast is now 99% (compared to 74% in 1982). The support I received while attending my first 3-day walk helped me in my fight for cancer and now I am hoping to return the favor to others. Please join me to help our community fight this disease. Thank you in advance. Your generosity will help save lives!
