Help me celebrate 20 years!
For the past 20 years you and many others have helped me raise funds for Susan G. Komen and the race to cure breast cancer! Breast cancer is a disease that touches many families. One in eight women will be impacted by this devastating disease and men can get it too! The good news is recent advances in treatment have saved so many lives. I first walked in the local Race for the Cure 20 years ago to support my best friend Linda Murphy after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has had one recurrence but with treatment is again cancer free. Linda’s name is at the top of the “In Celebration” list I wear each year on my back celebrating the many survivors. (Linda, this walk’s for you!!) I also wear an “In Memory” list honoring those who lost the battle. Please let me know if you would like a name added to either of my lists. It is my honor to carry the names with me at the walk.
Why Komen? Since 1982 Komen has funded more than $847 million in research, more than $1.8 billion in screening, education, treatment and psychosocial support. This all happens while maintaining low administrative costs. In addition, breast cancer research has also resulted in finding cures for other types of cancer! More details and information can be found on the Komen site www.komen.org
Three years ago my husband and I joined the Komen 3 day walk team, Hands up For Hooters. Under Sally Dunbar’s leadership, our team has grown. She is a breast cancer survivor and an inspirational leader. The first year our 69 member team raised $147,500. In 2016, with 123 members, we raised $240,000, and our goal this year is to raise $300,000! For the third year my husband “Chig” will join me for the San Diego Susan G. Komen 3-Day along with over 2000 other walkers. We will walk 20 miles each day for three days for a total of 60 miles. Each walker has a goal of raising $2300. Your generous donations each year have made it possible. In the past 20 years you have helped me raise over $41,500!
Please help us raise our funds by Mother’s Day May 14, 2017
My (our) heartfelt thanks to YOU for your continued support!!
Kathy Chigbrow (and Francis “Chig” too!)
