Welcome to Team STEPS!

Our team name STEPS stands for Screening, Treatment, and Education Programs. We strongly believe that the cumulative effort of each of us taking small steps will lead us to a cure for this dreaded disease. The team was founded in 2009 by Dr. Sheryl Cowan and has grown from 7 members to over 50 members. In 2016, STEPS was recognized as the 2nd place team raising over $114,000 in funds for this important cause.

The members of our team each walk for their own reasons. We are comprised of men, women, survivors, co-survivors and supporters. We have walkers of all ages and levels of physical fitness participating and each teammate contributes in his or her own way. We work as a team and will help prepare you for every aspect of the 3-Day event. No previous experience necessary.

Training officially starts in May, using the suggested Komen training schedule. We meet every Saturday during training season on the south side of Starbucks in Lakeside Village on Preston Road just south of Spring Creek Parkway, (4025 Preston Road, Plano TX 75093). Any 3-Day participant is welcome to join our training walks, whether you are on our team or not. It is not required that you attend the weekly training walks, but we promise you will get a lot out of the experience.

If you are concerned about fundraising, don’t be. Many of our team members are experienced at raising funds and will help you meet your goals. We also work together on some team fundraising to be sure everyone has enough funds to participate. No one in the history of team STEPS hasn't walked because they couldn't raise the funds. If you put in the effort, this team will help you succeed.

Meet our team leaders:

Team Captain and Founder Dr. Sheryl Cowan is a family medicine physician with a passion for her patients. She will make sure you are training in a healthy manner and are well educated about the latest advances in breast cancer. Sheryl has walked in 13 3-Day events.

Co-captain Dana Bilbray is a certified trainer and can help you with questions about fitness, gear, nutrition, and training. She is a 15-year breast cancer survivor and is dedicated to helping others She has walked in 11 3-Day events.

Co-captain Sharon Hudspeth is a 2-year breast cancer survivor who brings enthusiasm and energy to keep the team members motivated. She has walked in two 3-Day events.
