“Let’s go!!!!” It’s what the kids yell when they’re super-excited about something, so I think it is the perfect heading. I have been participating in the Breast Cancer 3-Day since 2005 and it’s time to lace up my sneakers again after a 3 year break due to COVID.
I started participating in this event as a way to remember and celebrate my mom. Being part of the 3-Day community is a difficult feeling to describe if you haven’t experienced it. Listening to stories from other walkers that mirror my own, sharing funny memories of my mom along with times of uncertainty and heartbreak, witnessing the sheer determination and strength of walkers and crew who are currently underground treatment, and being enveloped in a bubble of hope, tenacity, kindness, and love is what makes me want to return each year. I have missed it.
I always prepare for and walk in this event with my mom at the forefront of my mind, but there are others in my heart as well. I remember my friend and colleague Janine, who fought with a smile on her face and never complained. She was the definition of optimism and her memory continues to inspire all of us who were lucky enough to have known her. Several years ago, my childhood neighbor and friend, Liz, received a diagnosis of Triple Negative breast cancer. She continues to be an open and willing source of information, an example of hope and strength, and she lives every day to the fullest. Unfortunately, on September 4th, we lost Rose’s sister, Marie, to breast cancer. Marie was honestly one of the kindest, most gentle people I have ever known. Her smile was welcoming and she just had a way about her that always made you feel calm and at peace. I am dedicating my 2023 walk to her. My mom, Janine, Liz and Marie are heroic examples of love, courage, and strength.
The Boston 3-Day is not until August of 2023. However, I am starting my fundraising early so I can help the others on my team, Sandee’s Walkers, who are participating for the first time. If you would like to help me reach the fundraising commitment of $2,300 please make a donation by clicking the “Donate now” button on the top right of this page. Thank you so much! And now, I’m heading out for a walk!
Love,
Sheryl Beth
