3-Year, 27 Year Old Breast Cancer Survivor - Making My "Mess" My Message
My name is Rachel Toomey, and on August 6th, 2010, a few days following my 24th birthday, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. After the whirlwind of tests, a mastectomy, fertility preservation surgery, multiple reconstructive surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and two years of what will be a five year term on Tamoxifen, I can officially state that I am a 3 year, 27 year old cancer survivor. I credit my survival not only to the wonderful doctors I have been blessed with, but to the research and knowledge that organizations such as Susan G. Komen have fundraised to obtain.
My experience in last year's 60 mile journey was unforgettable. I've never felt such a fullness in my heart than I did on those three days. To your right you can watch the speech I was honored to give as I represented Philadelphia as their 2012 Survivor Speaker.
This year I will be walking beside friends, both old and new, who have continued to be an amazing source of support throughout my journey through diagnosis and as a survivor. They are the true reasons why I have been able to keep a smile throughout this process, and I am so lucky to have their continued support as they walk next to me, raising money towards a cure to the disease that could have taken my life.
Please help me as I strive once again to raise $2300+ for an organization that gave me the chance to have a life after my diagnosis. All donations, no matter how small, will make a difference.
Thank you to everyone who has donated in the past and has provided me with the love I needed to beat breast cancer. :)
