Taking the Challenge

On November 2010, I'll walk 60 miles over the course of three days with thousands of other women and men. The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure is a weekend of hope, as we honor lives lost, celebrate survivors, promote breast cancer research and help bring breast cancer care to those who so desperately need it.

Why 60 miles in 3 Day?

Back in Spring 2001, the world I lived in was shaken when my mom discovered a lump on her breast during a routine mammogram exam. I remember thinking that this kind of thing doesn’t happen to my family. Through prayer and extensive treatments, my mom is a nine-year survivor. I am doing this walk to honor her courage. She never showed fear during her ordeal. I started training in mid May, and I have logged 203 miles as of August 29, 2010. I'm also on a team, "Boxing Babes-Round 4". Scroll down to check out my blog.

You can help too!

I've agreed to raise at least $2,300 in donations. I've set my personal goal at $2,500. So I need your help. Please consider making a donation? Keep in mind how far I'm walking - and how hard I'll will have to trained.

For online donations, click on the button above the thermometer labeled "Click to donate to Carmen in 2010!". You can also call 800-996-3DAY to donate over the phone.

One person is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes in the United States. I hope that you'll share this incredible adventure with me - by supporting me in my fundraising efforts. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Sincerely,
Carmen G. Alvarado Vasquez

P.S. Your donation will not only help with funding research toward the cure for breast cancer, but it is also a tax-deduction.

22 miles...
On Saturday, my sister and I walked 13 miles at 4:50 am. The temp was 76 degrees and warmed up as we clock in 4 hours and 45 minutes. The weather was terrific!

Interesting thing happened about 2 miles to the end of our walk. A lady found a baby skunk near the trail. It looked injuried. I called 311. Hopefully, they found it.

I felt pretty good after I ate breakfast and took a 3 hour nap. My left foot was hurting though. I nursed it the rest of the day.

On Sunday, we walked 9 miles. Felt pretty good the rest of the day. My left foot didn't hurt... as much.

Next weekend we do 24 miles!!

We did 19 miles this past weekend.
That's right. My sister and I walked 7 miles on Saturday and 12 miles on Sunday. It took us four hours and 20 minutes.

On Sunday, when we hit the 9th mile, it was a killer. The bottom of my feet were in pain especially my left foot. I had tripped in the middle of the week, and had been taken it easy.

This Monday morning, I felt better than I expected. But with all the regular getting around walking, my foot is hurting again.

This coming week, we are scheduled for 22 miles! I really need to wrap my brain around that.

Third weekend to walk 16 miles
My sister and I walked 11 miles on Saturday and 5 miles on Sunday. It took us a little over hour hours.

Saturday was tough. So hot. I had to nap for three hours, but felt like a zombie the rest of the day.

Sunday was shorter, but mentally, difficult. I'm so glad my sister is walking with me. It really helps to talk the time away.

We did shoot the second video. My hubby will edit it soon.

This coming weekend we are doing 19 miles!!!

Walked another 16 miles this weekend
So tried. Rosario and I walked 6 miles Saturday and 10 miles Sunday. The last two miles were tough.

I just logged 146 miles. I had to take a 3 hour nap. Manuel reassured me it was recovery time. Feel a little guilty, sleeping the day away.

I plan to try some weigh training this week. No idea what to do, but will need to do some research.

Thanks for reading.

This past weekend I walked 16 miles!
My sister, Rosario, and I have been training together for a over a month. It has been fun hanging out with her, catching up, and exploring different trails in the area.

We start walking as early at 5:45 am. I have seen a lot more sunrises within the past month then I have my whole life. I'm not a morning person, but I think I am adjusting well.

We just joined a team called the Boxing Babes-Round 4. It's very encouraging to meet veteran walkers.

My goal of $2,500 is pretty scary, but I have faith things will work out.

Check out the great video my hubby produced on- http://www.doceproductions.com/Doce_Productions/3DAY.html
