Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure
|
0 to 60 in 3 Days
Please support me as I take an amazing journey in the fight to end breast cancer! The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. Net proceeds from the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™ are invested in breast cancer research and community programs.
My Journey
Donations have started to arrive and I would like to THANK all those who have already donated and plead to those who have not. Breast Cancer can strike anyone at any age at anytime. I learned about my Breast Cancer on February 25, 2005 at the age of 44. There was NO History of Breast Cancer in my Family, so why did I get Breast Cancer????? I don't know and no one does. When I found my lump I didn't think it was anything, but thanks to my Mom for pushing me to go to the doctor I went and was shocked to learn that it was Breast Cancer. There are so many different types of Breast Cancer and different types of Treatment. I went in to surgery on March 24, 2005 thinking OK, I will get this done and be back to work right away, I will give myself a couple of weeks off to rest. NOT! When I got out of surgery they told me that I had Stage 3 Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma (IDC) and that they not only did a Bi-Lateral Mastectomy but they also had to remove lymph nodes because the cancer traveled through the capsules. So that meant that I had to have 12 Rounds of Chemo and 32 Rounds of Radiation. I Lost my Hair on Mothers Day Weekend of 2005 so as a present to myself that weekend we (Mom, Tanya, Sue and myself) went to the Mall shopping originally for a dress to wear to my son’s (David) wedding while my husband and son were at Pocono for a race, we were walking by a jewelry store and I decided to buy myself the most beautiful pair of diamond stud earrings that I wore EVERYDAY to remind me that I was still a woman even though I had no hair! I never bothered to buy a wig I preferred hats and scarves, so now I have quite a collection. I went through treatment with the support of my family and friends. My husband Dan was a huge support and he even volunteered to give me my neupogen shots everyday. Tanya and David lived with us before they got their own place so it was nice to have them around during treatment to help out and keep me company. They bought a Min Pin “Minnie” who basically became my heating pad as she would sit with me everyday, we got so attached that I did end up keeping her when they got their own place. I attended my son’s wedding on June 11, 2005 and had a wonderful time; my Oncologist was great and scheduled my Treatments around the wedding. My friend Claudine and her kids (Isabella and Sebastian) were a huge support, they would come and pick me up, take me to physical therapy and then she would take me to the mall to walk and sit and have a treat (popcorn). It was my weekly out. My sister Sandie walked the 3-Day all by herself for me the year I had my surgery. So just when I thought, OK I am ready to return to work, I end up in the Hospital in October 2005 for what they think is a blood clot on my Right Atrium in my Heart. Off to Boston I go for a Cardic MRI and then back to the Hospital for a 2 week stay with a lovely little machine attached to me to monitor me. I felt great, missed my son's race at Limerock, the Runoffs which made me a little upset, but OK if it is a blood clot, I need to stay. Well after testing and testing they can't determine that it is a blood clot so it is labelled a "MASS", now I get to go for Echo Cardiograms every 6 months to monitor my friend on my heart. Fast forward to November 30, 2006, I go in for a regular check up and get the "we need to talk" from the doctor, well the need we to talk ended with you have some pre-cancerous growths, we need to go in and biopsy, well that ended up being a full hysterectomy for stage 1 ovarian cancer. Now this surgery I didn't mind, I actually felt great after. So now, I ended up being at home for roughly 2 years, I didn't drive for quite some time because I couldn't feel the bottom of my feet from one of the 3 Chemo Drugs (Taxol). I went back to work part time (very part time) for about 2 years after that period of my journey and I finally came back to work Full Time on October 1, 2009. Now, I feel GREAT, I am enjoying LIFE everyday. My attitude towards life has changed. Now everyday that I get out of bed and put my feet on the floor, it is a GREAT Day. It is even GREATER because I became a Grandmother on January 28, 2009. My Granddaughter Makenna Rose is my daily dose of sunshine. So PLEASE donate to this wonderful cause and help our future generations live a life Cancer Free.
So now that it is my 5 year Survivor Anniversary I want to do 2 things. First on my Anniversary I want a tattoo to mark how far I have come and second I want to walk the 3-Day with my Sister Sandie and any friends who would like to join us. So won't you be one of our teammates and help fight Cancer! If you can't walk with us, won't you make a donation; any amount small or large will help! Cancer really does SUCK, but with all the technology today I am a SURVIVOR!

Today we displayed the Grand Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge ST race car at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH. The White Mountain Chapter BMW CCA was nice to ask us to bring up the race car. David even got to take it out onto the track during the Open House's "Fun Run". The track let people take their cars onto the track for a 3 lap ride a round behind a pace car. So David brought the race car around a couple of times to break in the new motor. It was an absolutely beautiful day, the sun was shinning it was in the high 70s. I walked, walked and walked.
So tomorrow is Easter. I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Easter. Enjoy the Day with people you love.

OK, so I did it. I officially signed on to be an Official Training Walk Leader. My sister suggested I do it and I figured why not. I have to train and others have to train so why not train together. I plan on organizing my first training walk in April aftter I map out a couple of routes.

This past weekend Dan and I went to Tampa FL for a long overdue vacation. We arrived Thursday in the pouring rain. Checked in to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and started to unpack when on the TV we get a Tornado Warning for the Area ? What a way to start a nice relaxing long weekend get-a-way. The rain and the wind were unbelieveable, the palm trees outside our room window were blowing straight across. So we stayed in the Hotel, checked out the Casino (nope, didn't play). Watched the sights at the Casino, that was certainly interesting. Friday, the rain and wind was still bad, no tornado warning (thank goodness). So we ventured off to the Florida Aquarium and checked out the fish and corals. Lots of walking, 200,000 square feet of Aquarium. After the Aquarium visit, still pouring rain we checked out the International Mall and the Westport Mall. Didn't think I would train on my get-a-way, but due to the weather I ended up walking 15 miles on Friday. Saturday the sun came out (YEAH!) We visited Busch Gardens for the morning/afternoon and then took the 1 hour drive to Orlando and visited Epcot for the afternoon/evening. Another unplanned training day for a total of 10 miles on Saturday. Sunday, absolutely beautiful, SUNNY and WARM of course because we had to fly home today. Spent the morning/afternoon by the Hotel Pool and Hot Tub. Off to the Airport we go and what do we find, Flight Delay until 6:40pm due to bad weather in the Northeast. We finally take off home, we ended up in the last row of the plane. The flight was a little rough, but as we got closer to home the worse the flight got. Had to be one of the worse flights and landings I ever experienced, I closed my eyes and pretended that I was on a roller coaster. The person next to us was letting out little screams with every bump and roll we experienced and she was like the person that ususally sits in the front seat of a roller coaster going down the first drop on the landing, her scream was piercing. The landing was an exciting ride to the end of a really enjoyable Long Weekend Get-A-Way with Dan. I think next one will be in Vegas :D So I ended up doing a back to back training sessioin without even realizing it.

Well today at Noon I had my appointment to have my tattoo done. I would like to THANK John Burnham of Devotion Ink for doing a Beautiful Job on my tattoo. He incorporated both the Breast Cancer "Pink" Ribbon and the Ovarian Cancer "Teal" Colors along with the Words "Courage, Hope, Strength, Survivor" in my Tattoo. He personalized it for ME. By the way, tattoos don't hurt :D Oh yeah and it is on my upper back so I can have it showing or not. I highly recommend Devotion Ink for anyone thinking of getting a tattoo, they all do beautiful work.

Yes, 24 years ago my son, David Paul Maynard arrived a very happy and healty baby boy. Now he is a 24 years old and will be married to his wife Tanya 5 Years in June. They have given me the most wonderful gift that any person can ever receive, a Grandaughter, Makenna Rose Maynard who turned 1 year old on January 28th. Five years ago today I was sitting at the dinner table with David, Tanya, Bob, Sue and my husband Dan at the Common Man celebrating David's Birthday enjoying the evening with family and secretly waiting to hear from my doctor about my test results, little did I know that the next day the news would not be good. I got the call on February 25, 2005 around 1pm, the doctor wanted to see me in his office, I knew this was not good, it was a Friday and he wanted me to come in on Monday. I could not wait the entire weekend to find out what my results were so I insisted that he tell me over the phone. He told me that I did have breast cancer and that he would like to discuss my options at the office on Monday...this was the LONGEST weekend of my Life!
Today, I would like to Wish my Son a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY and tell him that I LOVE HIM more than anything, and even though we sometimes disagree and argue, it doesn't matter because he is my son and I will love him no matter what he thinks. I hope he enjoyed his Birthday Lunch at Villa Banca today.

Well on Saturday, I met 3 more Walkers, 2 of which were also Survivors. It was so nice to meet other walkers who have been touched by cancer. We all had Breast Cancer, different types, different stages, different treatments, but we were all training for 1 cause....to get rid of Breast Cancer so our future generations don't have to go through what we have been through. I admire them and am proud to train and walk with them. We may be on different "teams" but we are really just one big team fighting for the same cause. :D

Went for my appointment to my Eye Doctor Appointment yesterday, I saw Dr. Bunker. He is a great Doctor, he gives a thorough eye examination, you never feel like you are rushed. Verdict, a stronger prescription for my glasses. So I don't know whether that I am getting old that is causing my sudden need for stronger glasses or if it is one of the lovely side affects from the Chemo and Radiation. Either way, I will get new lenses for my 2 pairs of glasses I have now and possibly another pair of glasses for my collection. I figure they are like shoes, a girl just can't have too many pairs of sytlish glasses. Thanks Dr. Bunker!!

Well it is February, so that means, test, test and Doctors Appointments.
Last Week, Tumor Marker Blood Test and Bone Densomity Test. Today off to see Dr. Browne, my Onocologists to hear the results from my test. Tumor Markers - Normal (YEAH), PET Scan last month - Clear (BIG YEAH). Bone Densomity Test - Normal but 2% bone loss, so along with Vitamin D I also have to start taking calcium. The doctor was very happy to hear that I decided to participate in the 3-Day Walk. I get my next set of test and oncologist visit in 4 months which will bring me just before the walk. Thursday it is off to the Eye Doctor and finally Friday off to see my Primary Doctor. Yep, I am going to celebrate my 5 year Cancer Survivor Anniversary next month, but I still see all my doctors on a regular basis. I am lucky that I have wonderful doctors who actually communicate with each other and who I can talk to and ask q.uestions

Tonight is Yoga (Flexibility), Wednesday *REST*, Thursday is Mall Walk with Jenny, Friday, Caribbean Rhythem Class (Sounds like Fun), Saturday is another Mall Walk and Sunday I will probably collapse! I am determined to be prepared for my first 3-Day Walk, I want to finish the walk without too many problems or injuries.

Tonight I met Jenny at the Mall of New Hampshire and we walked for 1 hour inside the mall around and around and around. Walking in the mall is a lot different that walking on my treadmill. You walk a lot further and you can really feel like you are working your muscles. We are hoping to meet each week at the Mall to walk for an hour. Hopefully there will be others that will join us for the next training walk. Oh yeah, my butt hurt after walking the mall for 1 hour. I should be in good shape in the morning when I try to get out of bed and go to work. I know I used some muscles that I don't get to use on the treadmill. Looking forward to more Training Walks!!!!!!

I have a new friend that I met through my daughter-in-law. It is her Aunt Cindy. Cindy has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer and is scheduled for surgery on February 5, 2010. She may not be able to walk with us this year, but she will be in our thoughts and we will be be walking to honor her and the journey she now begins. I would like to pass on to her the Courage, Hope and Strength to become a Survivor like all of us before her. Please join me in giving her a few words of support!

Yesterday, I went to the Burlington Mall with my Daughter-in-law (Tanya), my Granddaughter (Makenna), my Niece (Amanda) and my Mother (Sis). Well I didn't prepare as well as I could have. I was the only one that wore heals.... I don't recommend this to anyone. We arrived around 1:30pm and didn't leave until 8:00pm, so we walked, walked and walked some more. I actually had to buy some flats because my feet hurt so bad. Next time, sneakers, a pedometer and using the time at the mall to train for the 3-Day Walk. We walked and shopped for a little under 6 hours. I think we did more walking than shopping. The Burlington Mall is a good place to walk when it is cold outside.
