Creative Approaches to Fundraising In the past, Breast Cancer 3-Day participants have come up with some incredibly creative and successful ways to raise funds and awareness to fight breast cancer. Read and share these ideas in our fundraising ideas library. Before you get creative, keep in mind that states and local communities have laws governing many fundraising activities, including raffles, auctions and other promotional activities. Compliance is the responsibility of each participant, and the Breast Cancer 3-Day cannot render legal or tax advice on these matters. Websites like http://rafflefaq.com/united-states-raffle-laws/ provide links to raffle laws for each state, to help you with your research.

My name is Carol Olmstead, a Breast Cancer 3-Day Coach in my second year. I am excited about walking in San Diego in November. After listening to our Breast Cancer 3-Day participants, some ideas have come to light that you may want to put to the test.
Fundraising Tip: At a local sporting or music event, you may come in contact with lots of folks who also support breast cancer awareness. Strike up a conversation with a fellow fan. |

Bring donation forms, a concise statement of why you are passionate about this cause and a pink “thank you” keepsake (for example, take a pink cotton ribbon, fold it over, secure it with needle and thread and attach a mini safety pin on the back). When people are having a good time they tend to be more generous. Another idea is to post information about fundraising events you’re hosting on the Breast Cancer 3-Day message boards. Give other members of the Breast Cancer 3-Day community an opportunity to come out and support you.
Training Tip: Consider investing in a pedometer and wearing it often. You may be surprised by the number of miles you actually walk. Set daily or weekly goals for yourself. The Breast Cancer 3-Day suggested training schedules are only a guide. Adapt them to your personal schedule and be sure to listen to your body during training. Create a diverse course for yourself, including opportunities to walk on city streets and sidewalks, mall walking and stairs. Take baby steps and build endurance over time. Another important tip: Hydrate! Alternate between water and sports drinks. I personally love Electro Mix and lime-flavored Gatorade. It is important to maintain a healthy level of sodium in the body. |

Hello! My name is Randy McClammy and I am a Breast Cancer 3-Day Coach. I had the honor of being involved in my first Breast Cancer 3-Day in San Diego in 2008, and will be participating again in 2009. My job is to inspire, motivate, and guide you through the journey of a lifetime. I provide helpful tips and creative ideas on fundraising and training throughout the event season.
Training Tip: Begin your training now and continue the enthusiasm throughout the year! Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a first time walker, I can help you with your preparations. Join training walks, share the excitement with your fellow walkers, and have fun. Start slowly if necessary and build your endurance in the months ahead. |

It begins with the correct shoes. Attend a shoe clinic hosted by one of our outfitters to fit you with the best shoes to keep your feet in top form. Track your miles and challenge yourself to increase those miles at a pace that is comfortable to you. It works! Before long you will see your progress will have successfully completed your personal goals in a short period of time.
Fundraising Tip: Be bold! Don’t be afraid to ask anyone for donations. Involve your friends, family, co-workers and community to work with you in your efforts. You can expand your circle of donors by asking each donor to ask one additional person. Your determination will prove to be victorious. A great way to achieve your fundraising goal is to contact local businesses to promote you and the Breast Cancer 3-Day. Think outside of the box! Host parties, sell merchandise, be visible and consider joining a team for group fundraising. Challenge yourself and your friends to get the word out. YOU are the success of the Breast Cancer 3-Day, and the coaches are here for you. Together, we will reach our goal to win the fight and have a world without breast cancer. |
Participant Center Tips: Follow Up Practicing good follow-through on your donation requests will increase your fundraising success. Send reminder emails to people you’ve sent fundraising emails to more than 2 weeks ago without response. Your initial request may have become lost in the shuffle. For those who have already donated, send thank you emails and updates on your fundraising and training progress. Keeping in touch will help cultivate these donors for years to come, and may even result in a second donation this year. Someone who has already supported you with a donation may be willing to pass your fundraising request on to a friend you don’t know, widening your circle.
On the Follow-Ups tab of your Participant Center, you can track the emails you have sent to see who has not yet made a donation. To easily send follow up emails, select "have not donated on your behalf for this event" from the "Show contacts who..." drop-down menu and click the "Send Email to All" button to access the list of suggested messages. You can use an existing message or create a new one.

My name is Jennifer Walker and I live outside of Chicago, IL. This is my fifth Chicago Breast Cancer 3-Day and my second time being a training walk leader. I became a training walk leader when I moved to the area; I didn’t know anyone to walk with except my dogs. Years later, I have numerous ladies willing to walk almost anytime. It kind of became “group therapy” for us and miles flew by as we walked and talked about everything under the sun. I started walking after a running injury, and found my body liked the change. When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, we took “talking” walks when she felt up to it after chemo. She has been gone fourteen years, and there isn’t a time I don’t think of her on every walk I take. |

Fundraising Tip: Start as soon as you are registered and ask everyone! When you are asking for a corporate donation, ask for a personal donation from Vice Presidents or CEOs as well. Most of these individuals will be inclined to give a large amount.
Training Tip: I use Vaseline for my feet and put powder in my shoes. If you can afford it, buy two pairs of shoes and rotate them each time you train. Do NOT buy new shoes just before the event. Train and break in the shoes you will wear on the actual Breast Cancer 3-Day. |
