We Remember
We remember the beautiful faces, the stories, the triumphs and the tragedies. On the Breast Cancer 3-Day, we pay tribute to past participants - walkers, crew members and volunteers - who have lost their lives to breast cancer. We will honor these individuals by displaying their photos, and some information about each person, along the inner walls and tables of the Remembrance Tent in camp. We invite you to contribute to this project and to honor your lost loved one.

If you would like to contribute, please send the following items:

  • A photo of your loved one on the Breast Cancer 3-Day or in any other setting. This photo may be in black and white or color, and of any size (we will resize photos for you). Of course, the bigger or higher the resolution, the better. Digital pictures are best, but if a digital picture is not available, then a photo can be mailed.
  • Information about the participant in the photo, including participant's full name, Breast Cancer 3-Days that the person participated in including location and year (example: “Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day Walker 2006”) and the dates of the participant’s birth and death (example: May 10, 1943 - October 23, 2007).

You can send these items in one of two ways:

  • Email: (preferred) Attach the photo and requested information to an email and send to coaches@the3day.org.  Note: By submitting this email, you are providing consent for the Breast Cancer 3-Day to use the photo and information you send.
  • Mail to:
    The Breast Cancer 3-Day
    Attn: We Remember
    205 N. Michigan Avenue, Suite 2640
    Chicago, IL  60601-5927

Please print out a copy of this webpage and include it in the envelope with your signature and date at the bottom of the document. It is important to note that we are honoring past participants of the Breast Cancer 3-Day who are no longer able to participate alongside us.  We will try, but cannot guarantee that all photos will be displayed in the Remembrance Tent. All photos sent, either electronically or in print, will not be returned. These photos will become property of the Breast Cancer 3-Day.

Deadline: All photos and accompanying information should be received by July 1, 2009.

Tips from the Inside
Each month, we feature an inside tip from a member of our coaching staff who you may recognize when you call our toll-free number or send us an email. Here’s what Kassi and Kelly would like to share this month…

Kassi

Hello! My name is Kassi Raboin. I am a Breast Cancer 3-Day coach and proud to have walked my first Breast Cancer 3-Day in 2006. Here are some tips you may find helpful while preparing for this incredible event.

Fundraising Tip: So many times we find ourselves reaching out to family and friends but forget about the community around us. I was looking for an opportunity to not only raise additional fundraising dollars but to get the word out about the Breast Cancer 3-Day. I spoke to the manager of a local restaurant and asked if I could hold a fundraiser at his restaurant with a percentage of the sales that day going to my fundraising efforts.

Not only did he agree to host this event, he offered me 20% of the proceeds for two Sundays. This was much more than I expected. I decorated the restaurant with pink balloons that were donated by a local party supply store. I posted some signage along the street and at the intersections to direct traffic. It turned out to be an incredible event!

Training Tip: I can’t stress enough the importance of training in the clothes (shirt, shorts, socks and shoes) that you plan on walking in during the event. I purchased a couple of shirts and started training in them. At first, I thought these were great shirts. They were lightweight and kept me cool. However, when I hit 8 - 10 miles, everything changed. They started irritating me. I quickly went out and bought new shirts and paid close attention to the stitching underneath the arms and around the neck. The next long walk I went on was much more enjoyable.

Fundraising Tip: Start a pink ribbon fundraising project by writing a special message celebrating the loved ones for whom you are walking on a pink ribbon. Laminate the pink ribbon and wear it on your shirt, purse or jacket. Carry 60 additional pink ribbons with you as you move through your day, including your workplace, church, family gatherings and while training. As conversations begin about your pink ribbon, ask others to make a donation and create a pink ribbon for you to wear on the event. Tell them you will walk one mile for their loved one. When you have finished selling your pink ribbons, fasten them together at the top of the ribbon using a silver binder ring. If possible, have all the cards laminated to protect them from the elements (or place your pink ribbons in a sealed bag). Show off your pink ribbon messages on-event by fastening them to your waistpack. If you sell the pink ribbons for at least $10 each, you can raise $600 from this one fundraising project.

Training Tip: One of the ways I enjoy preparing for the Breast Cancer 3-Day is by attending training walks in my community. Breast Cancer 3-Day training walk leaders create great routes designed to help you prepare for your 60-mile journey. The walks will feature locations to refill your water bottle and use the restroom at regular intervals. Find a training walk in your community by using our training walk search tool, or the Share List, both accessible through your Participant Center. There are multiple benefits to attending a training walk. You can make new friends and become more involved in the Breast Cancer 3-Day community by walking and talking with other participants. Attending training walks, and training with other participants ensures your safety and inspires you to stay on track with your training program. While you are walking the miles away, start a conversation about your fundraising success and ask your fellow walkers to share their ideas, too.

About the Beneficiaries
Eighty-five percent of the net proceeds from the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer.

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement.

Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure® and the Breast Cancer 3-Days, the organization has invested nearly $1.2 billion to fulfill its promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. For more information about Susan G. Komen for the Cure, breast health or breast cancer, visit http://www.komen.org/ or call 1 877 GO KOMEN.

Fifteen percent of the net proceeds from the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefit the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, a special field of interest fund that will provide support for breast cancer initiatives including research, treatment, prevention and education. The NPT Breast Cancer Fund is an endowment, which will ensure that the cause receives long-term, continuing support irrespective of gifting activities in years to come.

National Philanthropic Trust (NPT) is an independent public charity dedicated to promoting and facilitating charitable giving by individuals, families and organizations while expanding their knowledge in the field of philanthropy. Founded in 1996, NPT is one of the 100 largest charities in the United States with more than $640 million in assets under management. Since its inception, NPT has raised more than $1.1 billion in charitable assets, and made more than 22,000 grants to U.S. and international charities totaling $630 million. Led by a national board of trustees and a team of professionals with more than 100 years of combined philanthropic experience, NPT has proven expertise in the stewardship of charitable donations. Lynn Bury

Meet a Volunteer Training Walk Leader
My name is Lynn and I am training for my fifth Breast Cancer 3-Day. I live outside of Minneapolis, MN. This is my third year as a training walk leader. My dearest family friend lost her battle three days before the event in 2007 and now I walk in her memory. I myself can’t cure breast cancer, but I can certainly do something about it by raising money and awareness.

Fundraising Tip: Put your own talents to use toward raising money: baking, singing, throwing parties, cutting hair, mowing grass, blowing snow, etc. If it’s what you love, you’ll be more successful.

Training Tip: Find your own pace and stick with it; your body will appreciate it. Oh - and bring your camera!
